Ramsey Says Medicaid Expansion Decision Requires 'Analyzation'

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey revealed his latest thinking on Medicaid expansion today. He seems to be leaning against it again. For those of you keeping score, RonRam started out adamantly against this abridgement of our freedoms and outraged by the very idea of ObamaCare. Then he became open to it, sort of. Now, he admits he’s torn—with his deep distrust of the federal government doing battle in his mind against his obviously strong humanitarian impulses.

Bottom line? “It just takes a lot of analyzation,” he says—a response that doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. But don't misunderestimate RonRam. He's smarter than he looks.

Gov. Bill Haslam says he’ll announce within a couple of weeks whether he thinks Tennessee should expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Ramsey says, “I’m trying to give deference to the governor and let him come up with his decision on where he is.” Of the governor’s recommendation, the Senate speaker says:

It’ll carry some weight, but I think we’ll do our own analyzation. This is one that I’m really, really concerned about. Obviously the humanitarian side of me would say that if you can provide health insurance to more people then we ought to be doing it. But the realistic side of me says that the federal government, even though they say they’re paying 100 percent, can’t keep that up. It is impossible. There is no guarantee. As a matter of fact, I would almost lay odds that they will not keep their promise of funding and then what are our options? Either raise taxes on the people of state of Tennessee or remove people from the rolls. I’ve been through that once and it’s no fun. So it just takes a lot of analyzation.
