Why Do We Know Alexander Broughton's Name?

Let me say up front that I am not writing this post to shame anyone. I have been laughing as hard as anyone at the UT butt-chugging allegations and I have been trying to figure out how to say something funny about Alexander Broughton's lawyer telling everyone he's not gay, as if anyone would confuse his behavior with that of the normal behavior of gay men, and just have not come up with it yet.

But I've been thinking a lot about an off-handed remark Jonathan Meador made in his post on the subject — "While we're not glossing over the usually glossed-over specter of male sexual abuse..." Rachel Walden made a similar comment on Facebook, and I can't let it go.

If a woman arrived at the ER from a fraternity house on UT's campus with a dangerously high BAC and signs of sexual trauma, would the police and/or medical team release the details of their initial examination that led them to conclude a sexual assault might have taken place as quickly as they did? Or would then have kept some of the more graphic details back — details that might be embarrassing to an assault victim — at least until the police's investigation was complete and it was determined there was no victim?

I'm trying to imagine any other scenario in which I'd be laughing about how a person came to be injured in what police suspected was a sexual assault. The only scenario under which I am not a massive asshole is if he willingly did this without coercion knowing what the risks are. And considering this took place in a frat house, among fraternity brothers? Listen, I hope he was willing and not coerced. Hell, I hope he's telling the truth and he somehow did manage to drink himself into a .40 BAC. (It would take, for instance, a 160-pound man drinking over half a box of Franzia in an hour to raise his BAC to over .40, and that's assuming he didn't throw up or pass out making the effort.)

But I still suspect that, if this had been a woman, we wouldn't yet know about the possibility of anything being stuck in her butt and we wouldn't yet know her name, because regardless of what she or the fraternity said happened, the investigation into whether she'd been sexually assaulted would have taken more time.

And I suspect I wouldn't be laughing at Alexandra Broughton, you know? And that kind of makes me feel like a terrible person.
