Together At Last: Clayton and Campfield Unite (Sort Of)

Posted By on Mon, Aug 13, 2012 at 1:42 PM

A joke too obvious to be made was realized today, when state Sen. Stacey Campfield appeared at a press conference with disavowed Democratic congressional candidate Mark Clayton. The identity of Clayton's "special guest" was revealed by reporters at the scene — among them, WSMV's Cara Kumari and WPLN's Blake Farmer — who relayed the news on Twitter with admirable earnestness.

Apparently, no one (myself included) checked Campfield's blog over their morning coffee. As it turns out, Campfield spoiled the surprise at 8:18 this morning.

Last week, Campfield wrote a post titled "Yes, He is a Democrat," in which he revealed that the two had chatted several times by phone. A shock, no doubt.

After the jump, an excerpt from this morning's transmission:

Mark is a Democrat. I tried to convert him to the Republican party about a year ago telling him how the Democrat party leadership had left people like him a long time ago. They have now, for the first time, come out as pro homosexual marriage as part of their official party platform. They have been pro abortion for years.

Mark still refused to switch.

I intend to be at a press conference with Mark a little later on today to say that. As I said, Mark is a democrat but if we had more Democrats like him the world would be a better place. We need to get to where both parties are pro traditional family, pro second amendment and pro life. If we get there we can take the social issues off the table and just talk demand/supply side economics.

Till then, its battle on.

According to Kumari, Campfield said his appearance today was not an endorsement and that he would vote for the "most conservative candidate" (which is ... yeah, that's Clayton.) Farmer quotes Campfield as saying that "if it's wrong to say we need more pro-life, pro-family, pro-traditional family Democrats, if that's wrong then I don't want to be right."
