The festivities began with the pledge of allegiance, led by U.S. Congressman Marsha Blackburn's grandson, and a rather impressive rendition of the national anthem by state Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver, with a bonus verse. It concluded with the whole room singing "God Bless America" together.
In between there were occasionally rip-roaring speeches from the state's party leaders and members of its congressional delegation. There were creative re-creations of President Barack Obama's "you didn't build that" comment, talk of "walk-out-proof majorities" in the state House and Senate and, naturally, a few well-received teleprompter jokes.
