Anti Anti-Evolution Rally Saturday at the Capitol

Posted by on Fri, Apr 13, 2012 at 2:22 PM

A group of concerned parents and educators plan to protest the state GOP's awesomely backward piece of intellectual child abuse legislation tomorrow, April 14, on the south steps of the Capitol.

Leading the charge will be Larisa DeSantis, a former Vanderbilt earth sciences professor who has launched an online petition denouncing HB 268, which will allow creation pseudo-science and climate change denialism to be taught as real subjects in Tennessee schools. HB 368 passed earlier this week via the absent leadership of Gov. Bill Haslam, who refused to veto it in order to please his party's scientifically challenged base.

In a press release, DeSantis bemoaned the ill effects the bill would have on the state's already abysmal scientific literacy.

“While it is a partial victory that the Governor refused to sign this misleading and unnecessary legislation, I am deeply disappointed that he ignored the thousands of Tennesseans who called on him to use his veto power to reject it entirely. Even more so, I am worried about how this law will affect the students of Tennessee, including my daughter. We all want our children to be critical thinkers, but teaching that evolution and climate change are scientific 'controversies' will only lead to confusion, as the Governor himself has acknowledged."

The rally will begin at 2 pm. Darwin costumes are optional.
