Ramsey Urges School Kids to Stay Away from Capitol

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey issued an unsolicited "open letter" to the citizens of the world last night in an attempt to horn in on the coverage of yesterday's House and Senate votes to evict Occupy Nashville. He made it clear he believes fervently in the Bill of Rights—except for all those dirty hippies camping at the Capitol. (Also on Ramsey's list of exceptions are Muslims building terrorist training camps disguised as innocent community centers, but that's another story.) You see, the occupiers are such a lawless gang of cutthroats, Ramsey is saddened to report, that Tennessee's schoolchildren no longer are safe at their Capitol.

"Whether from the left or the right, I appreciate people engaging their government," Ramsey wrote. "However, to continue to ignore the reality of Occupy Nashville would be to shirk my duties as a public servant. I have to tell the truth and the truth is this: your War Memorial Plaza - a place dedicated to Tennesseans who paid the ultimate price in service to their nation and fellow citizens - is no longer a place for visitors. It is unsightly, it is unclean and, depending on the time of day, it is downright dangerous." He continued:

In essence, open acts of sex, drug use and violence you wouldn’t expect in an “R” rated movie are at times on full display on your War Memorial Plaza.

It saddens me because every year students from Tennessee schools visit our state capitol to learn about their government and see a very moving War Memorial dedicated to Tennesseans who died for their countrymen over the last 100 years. This year my advice to teachers looking to bring students here would be simple: stay home. I cannot in good conscience recommend the Capitol as a class trip destination at this time. I’m embarrassed to say it but it is the truth.

I hope and pray this situation will be resolved sooner rather then later and I can once again wholeheartedly recommend that visitors and students come to Nashville to learn how our government works.

We hope the kids return on the day the firehoses are turned on the protesters. "Look children," their teacher can say. "This is what happens to people who question the rich and powerful." Now there's a lesson to remember in how our government works.

He's just afraid the kids will play a rousing game of Pin the Tail on the Fascist Republican.

I love a walk in the Woods. It energizes my day.

But, I agree with Ronnie, as I do occasionally, or seldom, or rarely.

Last night at 11 p.m. it was tidy, quiet and completely safe. The only time that area is dangerous is when the legislature's in session.

A homeless camp on the plaza is a real tourist draw.

Well, no doubt the occupiers known as the business lobby have weighed in, which surely explains a lot, including most of what Ramsey does.

The Occupiers' fight for social justice and against corporate greed, power and control of OUR elected officials is not going end here, with the issue of having a tent or a vigil to illuminate the problems we face. Do they think the homeless will just disappear from our streets when they try to shut down the Occupy movement? This is their fight too, and we as good citizens should be willing to help these unfortunate people, not ridicule them or treat them with disgust! Sure, its easier to let them sleep under a bridge and forget about them, when they lose their jobs or health, and are unable to live the lifestyle of the rich and famous. Sure, it is an embarrassment, when the uninsured in desperate need of mental and physical health care pee on someone, or make a scene. This is not the purpose of the Occupy Movement, however, and we are from All Walks of Life, we are the 99% and most of America knows that this is their fight too! It is time for change, and it is coming.

He's going to need to provide documented examples of: "In essence, open acts of sex, drug use and violence you wouldn’t expect in an 'R' rated movie are at times on full display on your War Memorial Plaza." And it's called Legislative Plaza. The building next to it is the War Memorial Building.

Donna's got a thing for old, rich white guys with Southern Baptist preacher's haircuts. What about Herbert's comb over Donna? Does that exclude him?

OK Diana, the hand of fate has selected you to solve the problem of the homeless and corporate greed and fraud. Exactly how do you propose how to accomplish this daunting task?

gordy, don't be a tool, the occupy movement is a movement in response to a lack of answers to form an open forum for those answers to be found by way of community discussion and initiative.

Nobody has the answers, but at least we're trying right? Our government is content to cover their rich [predominately] white rear-ends and wait out their term in office, blind to the fact that America as it is, is an aging superpower that, frankly, is no longer a true superpower due to this gross abuse of power by the so-called elected representatives and the inevitable financial backlash of this idiocy.

Kelli incorrectly wrote: "And it's called Legislative Plaza. The building next to it is the War Memorial Building."

Legislative Plaza is the office complex that lies below the War Memorial Plaza which is the open space on which the squatters have set up housekeeping...for just a while longer.

If you don't have a plan how are you going to sell your reform ideas? Sounds to me like "All hat and no cattle". If you are going to stand out there in the rain and cold you need a plan. All the yada, yada isn't going to get you much. How would you change the system so as you put it "the so called elected representitives" are no longer so-called?

So, a man who doesn't think that it's safe for people to visit the plaza lets his adorable grandson visit him at the plaza?

Guess he's not THAT convinced that the protestors are dangerous.

Perhaps Ramsey is really reacting to the fact that the Occupiers give a damn about the real world the children will live in--the economy, the environment, the freedoms--whereas the fools, crooks and zealots who make up much of the legislature don't. What a disaster if the children should figure that out!

The only fools are the occupiers and supporters blaming the wrong source for their troubles and trying to change the greatest country in the world into something resembling European countries where far greater problems exist, such as 24% unemployment, riots because government benefits must be cut and workers can't retire in their early fifties and food and fuel cost far more. Occupiers are a bunch of smelly fools.

you mean like germany, which has 6% unemployment barely out of the recession, is bailing out half of europe, has worker protections, health care and education? or how about norway and sweden, with greater social mobility than we have? yeah, i'd be happy with 'turning us into that'

@Brenda Be: Germany's great. But they won't let anybody immigrate unless they can be assured of earning $66,000 Euros per year. They're not letting the uneducated and untrained into the country and they make it difficult for immigrants to gain citizenship and vote. Right now they have a shortage of skilled workers. If we followed Germany's example we wouldn't be bothered with Somalian gangs in Minnesota, MS-13 all over the place, and 11,000,000 illegal immigrants sucking up our tax dollars and taking jobs from Americans. You do remember when Americans did construction, put roofs on houses and even mowed lawns, don't you. But Germany aside, where we're headed is more on the line of Portugal,Spain, Italy, And Greece. B.O.'s policies have already earned us a drop in our credit rating and has everybody enjoyed the big increase in their insurance policies because of B.O.'s requirement that insurance companies keep larger reserves? Yeah, Germany's great but we're emulating Italy and Spain with a good shot at Greece and when Obamacare kicks in watch prices skyrocket to pay for it. Of course the financial troubles at that time will still be blamed on Bush.
