Ignoring Critics, Floyd Repeats Threat Against Transgender People

Posted by Jeff Woods on Wed, Jan 25, 2012 at 2:04 PM

Rep. Richard Floyd
  • Rep. Richard Floyd
Gov. Bill Haslam seems sympathetic to fears that anti-gay rhetoric and bills in the legislature could lead to more harassment and violence against GLBT people in Tennessee. Asked at a news conference today whether he shares that concern, the governor said:

Obviously, that’s not the environment we want to set in Tennessee. In terms of legislation, I think there’s better things for us to focus on this year.

But Rep. Richard Floyd remains unrepentant. Pith asked Floyd today whether he’d like to take back that threat to “stomp a mudhole” in any transgender person who offended his wife or daughters. Instead, Floyd complained about threatening email and phone calls he said he’s gotten since he made the remark and went on another rant against transgender people.

I’m not anti-anything. I’m just pro-family. They can say anything they want. If they want to talk about violence, I’ll let them read the emails I’ve gotten. I never said anything about violence. I said what I would do personally if my family was involved, and I meant every single word of it. I’ve had a few phone calls with death threats. It is what it is. Do I regret saying it? No, I don’t regret saying it. Would I do it? Yes I would. Or try. It would just be a bad hair day if somebody approached me.

The Family Action Council’s David Fowler, meanwhile, also claims to be under attack since he made his "License to Bully" bill his organization’s No. 1 priority for this session. Fowler's critics apparently are hoping he winds up in a special place in hell.

The unfortunate thing in our culture is that we’re getting to the point where oftentimes we can’t say anything without it becoming uncivil and getting off the merits of the discussion. What’s ironic is that if children are learning from the parents who send me the emails that are very descriptive as to what I should do with myself and where I should spend eternity, if they are emulating their parents then they are probably the bullies.

How exactly is "stomping a mudhole" in someone not saying "anything about violence"? Does he have some different definition of violence than the rest of the civilized world??

It seems obvious both of these people are a danger to the public, and pathetically threatening to do so!

If Floyd doesn't know what a "stomping" is, perhaps English is his 2nd language, and it would appear to be a distant 2nd at that.

What a couple of crybabies. Floyd couldn't stomp his way out of a paper bag.

"f they want to talk about violence, I’ll let them read the emails I’ve gotten." Yes, please share them. I would like to see what he considers to be "threatening" e-mails. Not saying he didn't get any, but it would be nice to see if they're on a par with "stomp a mudhole" in a person. Frankly, I'm really tired of these idiots and their violent rhetoric who then cry for the whaaambulance claiming they got mean e-mails so that PROVES their hate speech is justified.

Haslam isn't sympathetic, his stupid self signed law that prevents LGBT rights, and now, the Community is in direct harm because of this crazy Floyd guy. I live in East TN, Where discrimination is its worst. Haslam either needs to come to the times, and accept it and pass much stronger protection and equal rights laws, or be voted out of office! I will NEVER Vote for Haslam EVER! He is only sympathetic to big business and Evangelist. He's governs with a bible in ones hand and a wad of money in the other!

Fellow Tennesseans need to Vote this garbage out of Public Office. Since Haslam has been passive on this issue, that means he approves of it. We need to vote Him out too. I am Intersexed, and if her tries to "Stomp" me, he would get two hits in, before he meets my shiny Brazilian Bodyguard and 13 of his buddies!!!!!!!!

Great call, senator. Try to attack a southerner in a southern state and see how long it is until one of them has a concealed weapon and shoots you because you're such a big tough man that you need to beat up a woman. Who's the real person we should be protecting women from?

You said in the article "But Rep. Richard Floyd remains unrepentant. Pith asked Floyd today whether he’d like to take back that threat to “stomp a mudhole” in any transgender person who offended his wife or daughters" I should point out that his threat had nothing to do with a transperson offending his family but was a threat of violence just for being in the same vicinity as his family.
I grow so tired of these kind of verbal attacks from small minded bigots. But unlike Mr. Floyd I follow the dictates of my faith. So, to Mr. Floyd I say I truly hope that you can make a full recovery of the severe case of Cranial Rectitis that you suffer from. It must be horrible to have your head shoved so far up your backside. I can see why you have such a crappy attitude. I will keep you in my prayers.

"I think there’s better things for us to focus on this year."

Yeah, like legislatively stomping all over teachers again.

Guys like this are rich, fearful, hetero, older white men who can't stand that they are about to become the minority in this nation. So, they say things like this, and then wrap themselves in the flag and the Bible for protection. Mr. Floyd--would Jesus have "(stomped) a mudhole" into someone he perceived as different?

It is crap lie this that keeps TN is the dark ages. I have lived in TN off and on most of my life and no matter how hard I try, my love for the place and the good folks there, I just cannot abide living in the midst of such outright bigotry and ignorance...

These guys need to be fired, sued and vividly brought into awareness of 21st century reality, and not necessarily in that order...

People can really be idiots...sheesh!

Hey guys, I created a petition asking Rep. Richard Floyd to apologize for his violent, transphobic remarks. If you guys would sign and spread this petition around, I would be incredibly grateful.

More than likely he's a closeted homo that's acting this way to ward off suspicion that he likes to take it in the butt from a transsexual. I doubt anyone would fornicate with that retard of his diluted offspring for fear of further contaminating the gene pool with more public displays of monstrositous disgrace such as this. The Tennessee legislature should be ashamed to have a fat, insecure loaf of lard representing this State. Tennesseeans, do the right thing come election time, send Grandpa packing home to retire where his fat ass belongs, if he wants to contaminate his inbred family with hate, that's on his onus, vote him out and give him the Darwin award, he's earned it.

We all need to practice the Golden Rule, and Live and let Live. BOTH SIDES! Or else, we will see something bloodier than the Civil War. As Honest Abe urged. paraphrasing, that we would be best served, to listen to the better angels of our nature.
