Around Town Philip Augustus, First Emperor of Nashville

How did this bizarre bust of Phil Bredesen at the Nashville library escape our attention for so long? The AP’s Erik Schelzig posted this picture on his Facebook Page and immediately drew commentary. We think this bust does an outrageous injustice to Bredesen's fabulous comb-over, which we here at Pith always have admired. But friends of Schelzig seemed more shaken up by the former governor's chest baring.

“I think it’s a little creepy,” one wrote. “Why is he shirtless? The PNB we know and love is never without a collared shirt.”

“Do you think he posed for it topless?” another wondered.

“I’m dressing him with my eyes,” Tennessean ex Jennifer Brooks wrote. She added: “Hey! Hands up, everyone who wants Gov. Haslam to go with the same sculptor, in a Rodin 'Thinker' pose."

Finally, Bredesen himself popped up to beg for mercy. “Guys,” he wrote, “Give me a break! The sculptor likes to do ‘classic’ busts. …”
