Late last night, we launched the Scene's newest blog, Country Life. Its focus will be on arts and culture — all that stuff at "the back of the book," as we call it, including visual art, books, film, theater, TV and so on.
So why another blog?
Pith in the Wind started out as our catch-all, generally-about-everything blog, but eventually found its voice as a place best suited to news and politics, and all the concomitant arguments and countermeasures. Sure, some of us continued to post about artsy stuff — look, an awesome movie! Hey, that painting has an interesting story behind it! — but it felt a little out of place sometimes.
From here on out, we can keep the political shop talk going right here on Pith — where there's unlikely to be a dull moment any time soon — and the artsy posts will live over at Country Life. We hope you'll check it out.

The question kicked around in the Scene office must have been, "What boring, lifeless, sounds-least-like-an-arts-blog name can we give the new blog?"
And the answer come back, "Country Life", which sounds like a magazine for rural retirees! That's gold, Jerry! Gold!
Too bad. "Kenny" would have been better, and would have made just as much sense.
You should have rejected MR. PINK while you were at it.

The magazine covers the pleasures and joys of rural life, as well as the concerns of rural people. It is primarily concerned with rural communities and their environments as well as the concerns of country dwellers and landowners and has a diverse readership which, although mainly UK based is also international. Much of its success has historically been built on its coverage of country houses, architecture and gardening.

Modern definition of "country life:" anything that ain't New York City. Nowadays you qualify as "country" if you can name the color of a John Deere...and distinguish it from a horse.
And that led to this: Anybody else got a "You qualify as country" definition?
Looking forward to the pickle recipes and articles on raising chickens. Where would one submit an article on "Composting for High Rise Dwellers"? also, "Raising Grass Fed Beef on Your Roof : 10 Beginner's Mistakes" ?
My grandmother reads a magazine called Country Life. The choice as a name for an urban Arts and Culture blog seems a bit bland/odd/GIANTMISNOMERWHATTHEFUCKWEREYOUTHINKING.
Hey, I told Roxy Music it was a weird name for a record by a bunch of British glam rockers. Bryan Ferry never listens.
I hope there will be articles such as how to catch a free range chicken, or how to slaughter hogs. Both are fun stuff and need to know for country people.
There absolutely will, if "free range chicken" is code for "touring Robert Bresson retrospective." Don't know yet about slaughtering hogs. Would you settle for sacred cows?.
I believe my article about controlling one's herd would fit in there. It contains useful pointers for the legislative leaders.
"I hear it's also a Roxy Music album."
Well, sure. What exemplifies Nashville arts and culture better than a 70s British glam rock album. It's a shame there have been no albums produced here in Nashville in the last 40 or 50 years that might have provided a better, more logical inspiration. If only Nashville had a thriving music scene like those Brits in the 70s did.
