International Lens: Sons of Lwala
Where: Vanderbilt's Sarratt Cinema, 2301 Vanderbilt Place
When: 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15
While it’s de rigueur for the International Lens Film Series to bring the world to our doorstep — giving Nashville cinephiles an opportunity to peek in on far-flung visions from around the globe — it’s rare for these Sarratt Cinema screenings to have the close-to-home connections of tonight’s film. Milton and Fred Ochieng’ are two brothers who were raised in a Kenyan village before they both attended Vanderbilt Medical School. When they lost their parents to AIDS, they returned to their homeland intent on establishing the medical clinic that had been their father’s dream.
Sons of Lwala screened at the Nashville Film Festival in 2008, winning three awards including Audience Award for Best Documentary. The film illustrates uncommon generosity repaid by uncommon generosity, and it reminds us that our communities are our most important responsibilities — as well as our greatest assets.

Wonderful film. Just to clarify, regarding the 2008 Nashville Film Festival, SONS OF LWALA picked up the Audience Award for Best Documentary that year. Best doc went to SHAKE THE DEVIL OFF.
