I wrote a Critic's Pick about Cameryn Moore's Phone Whore in this week's Scene, and last night I saw the first of two performances she'll be doing at Little Hamilton. A lot of what I knew of the performance was from clips I'd gleaned from the Internet, so I had a pretty good idea of what I was in for: raunchy, sexy, smart theater with long stretches of uncomfortable silences — the kind where you notice yourself needing to swallow, and feel as if it sounds like a cartoon "GULP."
But what I hadn't expected was just how therapeutic the sex-positive event was going to be. Moore is extremely forthcoming — you get the idea that she gets a lot of her material from frank and open discussions with friends — and she held a Q and A session after her performance, answering questions from the audience, but also just having a conversation that treated sex and fantasy with both lightness and gravity. She continues her work as a phone sex operator (or PSO, for those in the know), even as she's on tour. The work is very close to her heart, and it shows.
There will be another performance tonight at 8 p.m. I keep wanting to say, "But it's not for everybody," because, like I said, it's pretty raunchy stuff. But really, I think it is for everybody. If you're brave enough.
