Down in the Dumps over Todd's Arrest, Gun Freaks Lash Out at Harwell and the RINOs

Gun lobby leaders, like state Sen. Stacey Campfield and Tennessee Firearms Association director John Harris, are keeping a stiff upper lip and playing down the damage done to their cause by Rep. Curry Todd’s arrest. But at Internet forums, gun lovers themselves are distraught—outraged at Todd, their one-time hero, for wrecking their credibility and uniformly pessimistic about expanding the right to carry anytime in the near future.

“They'll use this to beat us like a red-headed step-child and I don't know of anything we could say that would matter,” one commenter wrote.

What’s more, Todd’s arrest exacerbated the gun lobby’s anger at House Speaker Beth Harwell and other Republicans in the legislature. In their first year in unassailable control of state government, Republicans did nothing to expand Second Amendment rights for fear of offending independent voters who think the gun lobby is crazy and dangerous. In their website comments, gun owners are tarring Harwell, et al. as squishes for refusing to let them carry their weapons wherever they please in the state. Harwell voted against the guns-in-bars bill that Todd championed.

“Anybody who voted for Harwell as speaker needs to go this time,” another commenter said. “We need a strong real conservative not some RINO in the speaker’s seat.”

Here are more comments from the websites of the Tennessee Gun Owners and Tennessee Firearms Association:

Regardless of how the case unfolds for Curry himself or the final disposition of the case and charges, the damage done to pro-gun initiatives is indescribable. As the point man for one of the more heated and publicized bills, (restaurant carry bill) for more than two years, there couldn't have been a worse person to do what he did. … I will always be grateful for the hard work, time and effort that Curry put in getting that law passed but there is a piece of me that just wants to punch him right in the face.

The fact that he might have been drunk and had a gun in the car is all that'll matter. Remember the rhetoric while trying to pass the guns in restaurants legislation? Dodge City lawlessness, nightly shootouts across the state, the OK Corral, dogs and cats living together, women and children being shot dead in the streets. To add insult to injury, this isn't just an HCP holder, nor is it just a TN lawmaker with an HCP. This is the TN lawmaker with an HCP that pushed for what they call the "guns in bars law". They'll use this to beat us like a red-headed step-child and I don't know of anything we could say that would matter. Logic doesn't work with that group, they deny its existence. Whatever happens to Curry Todd because of this, our cause has been seriously diminished by his actions.

All credibility, we had with the guys who have been forming and advancing our rights, has essentially gone down the proverbial s**h*i*tter.

He was drunk in a car, not drunk in a bar. At that point there was more to fear from the car than the gun.

Not being a Republican, I have had a hard time with this RINO label. As best I can figure it out, it basically means any Republican who is not totally bat-shit crazy on 100 percent of the issues. Am I right?

Greystone Pharmaceuticals? Those guys are bunch of crooks who cooked their books.
Yes, Perry, you're correct.

@gast - you still don't understand. We were never afraid of bars. We were afraid of armed drunks. The GOP-dominated General Assembly was afraid of them too - that's why it's against the law to possess a firearm when you're hammered.

Whether you refuse to acknowledge it or not, that's the connection with this story.

Gangs are far more dangerous than an armed drunk with a permit, and yet liberals never concentrate their attention on them or demand action. It takes complaints from an outraged neighborhood citizenry before anything is ever done. I guess y'all too afraid of Al Sharpton. And before any of you jump all over my comment, I'll explain the reason for it to you who are slow-witted: It's to bring things into perspective. You've got a political enemy under fire right now but you never aim at society's enemies if they have half a chance of ever voting for a democrat.

So...we can't be for gun control and be against gangs or Al Sharpton. Yeah, we're all for gang violence and Al Sharpton. Can you even hear yourself? And we're slow witted? What a bizarre little reality you've created for yourself. When you can say crap like that out loud and it doesn't sound crazy...you are genuinely certifiable. Mad as a hatter. Or just an average teabagger crackpot.

Perry, your spot-on definition of RINO has been submitted and published on urbandictionary.com (with an ever-so-slight modification). Of course, I'm taking the credit.

Thanks for the praise for my definition. And as soon as I crack the IDs on this system, I will be suing you. Of course, "tort reform" frees you from any actual responsibility or liability. :).

One guy trips over his d*ck and the world goes crazy?

Nothing in the merits of lawfully-armed citizens carrying wherever they want has been affected by this. It's a fart in church - just open the windows, and it will air out the stink.

Stick to the facts, the documented history of other states that haven't had any issues with it, and the unassailable guarantee given us by the Constitution of the United States, and calm down, fer chrissake.
