State Democratic Party chairman Chip Forrester is defending 96-year-old Dorothy Cooper's right to vote today and trying to exploit her story to raise campaign cash. When you're a downtrodden Tennessee Democrat, we guess you have to do what you have to do.

"Tennessee's new Republican 'photo ID' law has successfully suppressed another voter," Forrester's email pitch begins. "Meet Dorothy Cooper ..."

Forrester goes on to castigate Republican state Rep. Debra Maggart for her nonchalant, YouTube-captured dismissal of claims that the state's new photo ID voter law will make it harder for the elderly and poor to vote.

"Tell me how people are buying beer and cigarettes?" she asked. "They have to have an ID to do that ... I have a hard time believing that all these people don’t have an ID. … You have to have a photo ID to get public housing."

Forrester denounces Maggart's remark as a "disgraceful and sickening way to talk about responsible registered voters like Dorothy Cooper! Dorothy and our grandparents deserve better." Then he gets to the point:

Please give $5, $10 or $25 to support our efforts to ensure people like Dorothy — or your grandmother — can be a voter on Election Day.
