Well, it's the middle of August now and there's no rain in Texas. Almost 80 percent of Texas is at the worst levels of drought.
So, did Texans just not pray hard enough? Is God sending some kind of message to Rick Perry? What if that message is that Rick Perry shouldn't run for president? Or that global warming is real? Or maybe it's that God rightly responds poorly to "If you really love me, you'll do [x]" type manipulations? Or that God won't come through for desperate people who really need help? Or that God is not Rick Perry's genie?
I don't know. But I'm not sure how anyone does. Texas prayed for rain. It didn't come. Who knows if there's some divine message?
And that's my problem with people who want to run our country like some kind of Christian theocracy. It's not just that i don't want to live in a Christian theocracy (theocracies tend not to be very good places for people like me). It's that, in a theocracy, you're dependent on the human beings getting the messages from God to correctly interpret them.
I think Ron Ramsey and Rick Perry are fine men and fine politicians*. But I don't think I'd go to a church where they were pastors.
*Note, i wrote this before Rick Perry started accusing Ben Bernanke of betraying our country so terribly that he deserves to be executed. I take back the part about Perry being a fine politician. For a politician to say, even as a joke, that people he considers his political opponents deserve death is far, far over a line. I hope Ron Ramsey would agree.
