Pick of the Day: The Coathangers at The Basement

Posted by D. Patrick Rogers on Sun, Jul 3, 2011 at 12:27 PM

The Coathangers

When: 9 p.m.
Where: The Basement

Some years ago — probably about three, if I had to guess — Atlanta’s all-girl party-punk quartet The Coathangers were scheduled to play Nashville’s Springwater Supper Club and Lounge. A couple of my more lecherous friends decided they’d go — primarily, they admitted, so they could ogle The Coathangers and maybe even ask a couple of them out. I, having given the ’Hangers a listen and decided that tunes like “Nestle in My Boobies” and “Parcheesi” weren’t exactly my speed, decided to sit it out. (By the way, my buddies either struck out or — more likely — didn’t even take a swing.)

But with the release of last month’s Larceny and Old Lace, The Coathangers have taken a step in a surprisingly impressive direction. While they’re still very much students of The Slits’ sloppy, imprecise but outstanding punk rock, they’ve grown leaps and bounds as performers and as songwriters, penning fleshed-out rock tunes that are dark and sneering. Not to mention that there’s a sweet pop tune or two in there as well (“Go Away,” for instance), indicating that these young ladies have even more potential … and my creepo friends probably still have crushes on them.

Next time I want to induce a headache upon myself, I will give this another listen. It's junk like this that screws up any chance a female artist might have in the rock music genre. Apparently if you have boobs, squeak into a mic and bang around on a few instruments, you can be in a girl band. Yuck.
