This 45-year-old musical by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt — creators of The Fantasticks — is as rare as they come: Only two actor-singers handle the entire score of nearly 20 songs. The original had a decent run on Broadway with stage legends Mary Martin and Robert Preston in the leads, the latter winning a Tony Award for his performance. It's a sensitive, gentle show about a couple's 50-year marriage adapted from Jan de Hartog's play The Fourposter.
With no apparent Middle Tennessee productions of recent vintage, this new Boiler Room Theatre mounting represents something fairly unique, and it'll be interesting to see how the music holds up nearly half a century hence. At least one serious radio pop hit, "My Cup Runneth Over," emerged from the show during its heyday. Director Scott Logsdon, fresh off BRT's recent concert staging of Funny Girl, returns, and his cast is Sondra Morton and — usually seen directing — Corbin Green in a fairly uncommon stage appearance.
