Commemorating the first anniversary of the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, this new two-person show examines the recent irresponsible convergence of oil and money in the Gulf Coast. Portland, Ore.-based artist Brian Borrello grew up in New Orleans. His newest paintings on paper and canvas incorporate oil samples the artist collected after the Deepwater Horizon rig started hemorrhaging. Borello’s monochromatic works range from biomorphic to purely abstract, and they speak to the artist’s concern for the ecology of his home region.
In 1991, Michelle Firment Reid’s canvases documented the Gulf War and the resulting oil spill. According to the artist, the new work focuses on a different kind of war. She says, “This one is still about oil, here at home, on our own Gulf shores.”
