It’s been a long time since Three Ring Circle’s debut, but while its members’ schedules are as packed as ever — bass man Dave Pomeroy remains a busy session player and Local 257 prexy; resophonic guitarist Rob Ickes works with bluegrass’s Blue Highway; and fiddler / mandolinist Andy Leftwich remains with Ricky Skaggs’ band — they’ve had a good amount of time to drill down into a sound and style all their own.
Brothership, released on Ickes’ ResoRevolution label, shows how deeply the trio has settled into a blend of funk and fiddle tunes that’s supple and inventive, yet noticeably tighter and more economical than its predecessor. Early releases “Just A Rumor” and “Wildflowers” — yep, the Tom Petty song, perfectly delivered here by guest Jon Randall Stewart — show off all of the group’s strengths. But the entire album is a kaleidoscopic delight, so full of fire and virtuosity that it’s hard to believe there’s just three guys doing all the work.
