In January of 2008, I was drafted by the Scene to write my first-ever Critic’s Pick, the subject of which was surly local comic Chris Crofton. Little did I know that in the coming months and years, Crofton’s Best of Bread radio show would be dropped from WRVU for a still-controversial “violation of WRVU equipment policy,” and I, as a full-time Scene staffer, would have the opportunity to serve as “Transmission Doctor” for the new and improved Chris Crofton Show, a weekly web-based comedic audio blog. (I’d use the term “podcast,” but the show isn’t available on iTunes … yet. Stay tuned.)
Since its inception, over 50 episodes of The Chris Crofton Show have been sent down the Interpipes via the Scene’s humble (read: not humble) music blog Nashville Cream. Now, in a live taping that Crofton & Co. are dubbing “Episode 50” — sequentially, it will actually be No. 57, but aside from me, who’s counting? — the comic I once described as having a “Bill Hicks-meets-Sam Kinison” style will celebrate in distinctively surly fashion. Expect all your favorite bits, sidekicks, pranks and rants, plus wacky clips to be presented via The Belcourt’s glorious silver screen, and an appearance from a very special surprise guest. Man, we’d love to spill the beans on that special guest, but we promised we wouldn’t. But trust me: You’ll wanna see this.
