Sheila B.'s latest show, Get Your Purse, may be a surprise to longtime Nashville art scenesters who know the artist for her folksy paintings featuring country stars and other Southern imagery, which have graced the walls at The Arts Company, the sorely missed TAG Art Gallery and other venues around town. Featuring photos shot exclusively with her iPhone, Get Your Purse captures what Sheila B. describes as "overlooked moments that I find telling — part of a bigger story." The iPhone, she says, makes it "easy to visually trespass without attention paid — no one really notices phones anymore."
And another nice thing about her iPhone: Like her Leatherman, Sharpie and Moleskine notebook, she always has it with her, even when she's bounding around the country working as a scenic artist on films such as The Green Mile, The Last Castle, 21 Grams, Hannah Montana: The Movie and Country Strong, not to mention HBO's highly acclaimed miniseries John Adams. Get Your Purse opens in the Belcourt lobby on April 2, and there's a reception from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 3. The show will remain on display through April 30.
