To lesser-informed comedy fans, cellar-dwelling comic-book nerds and most folks who float down the mainstream, Maria Bamford may always remain “that chick from the Comedians of Comedy.” But apart from touring and appearing in films and television with her fellow C of Cs — Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn and formerly Zach Galifianakis — Bamford has carved out a pretty strong niche for herself all on her own.
Bamford’s lady-nerd shtick gives even graphic-novel-toting mega-dweebs like Posehn and Oswalt a run for their money, as she riffs most self-deprecatingly on her overachieving family, her mind-numbing experiences as a temp and her own general weirdness. In recent years, Bamford has done voice work for shows like Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time, released a comedy album titled Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome, and — perhaps what she’s most recognized for — appeared in a series of holiday-themed Target commercials in which she expertly portrays a flighty housewife type. Good stuff.
Oh, and her brain-shattering pterodactyl impression is completely uncanny.
