Taking the New Tennessean for a Spin

Posted by Betsy Phillips on Fri, Jan 21, 2011 at 11:30 AM

The Tennessean has a new website and I may lose my Pith cred for saying so, but I really like it.

Nothing on the front page moves up and down so dramatically that you get sea sick. I have yet to find any words that randomly cause a small window to open. And I think the layout makes things easy to find. It feels downright spacious.

I don't know if it'll win any design awards, but it feels a million times easier to use.

Really, the old website was so bad that anything was bound to be a major improvement. But this is nice.

Still no search by date tool. The search function's always been a big problem.

I wish they'd give me more of my information in slide show form! I'm so tired of reading from top left to bottom right after 40+ years.

Slide shows = page hits. That is, when you have slide shows that work in all browsers. I haven't read one of their slide show "stories" since I switched to Firefox several years ago. Oh well.

I'm still longing for a site that doesn't feature sports -- usually the Titans -- every single damn day as the lead group of stories.
