When: Through Jan. 20

Commercial photographers in Nashville are familiar with Chromatics’ retail space for their imaging needs. You may be surprised to find that the store also has a gallery on the second floor that rotates show after show of interesting art. This weekend offers one of your last opportunities to catch their latest installation. Rock and Blues features paintings by Ray Stephenson and jaw-dropping (we’re not exaggerating) photos by Bill Steber.

In 1997, Steber was awarded a grant to chronicle blues culture in Mississippi. His one-year exploration of dying Delta traditions produced the "Stones in My Pathway" series, some of the most compelling and arresting work that you might ever get a chance to see. We like to keep our cool, but this stuff blew our socks off. Integrating studies of African tradition, Southern lifestyles and blues legacies, Steber’s show is a must-see for any music enthusiast.

I'm a huge fan of Bill Steber's photography — his jug band The Jake Leg Stompers seems like a natural outgrowth of this work.
