I don't want what happened to Akasha Adonis to be lost while everyone is rightfully angry at Belmont. But information is only slowly leaking out from Jackson.
1. Adonis alleges that she was assaulted while waiting for the doors at Kohl's to open and that Kohl's employees stood around while it happened. No one, I don't think, is saying that this was tied to her identity. She wasn't assaulted because she was a transwoman and the Kohl's people didn't stand around and watch because she was a transwoman. That all happened because opening a store at three in the morning the day after a major family holiday hardens the hearts of people involved.
2. The officer involved, Adonis alleges, treated her with respect until he found out that she was transgendered, at which point, his attitude towards her changed and what happened to her seemed to be no longer cause for him to be concerned.
Any one of us might be accosted at a store, if we have something someone else wants. It's not too much to ask that the police treat all victims of assault with respect and to take the crime committed against them seriously.
Anyway, the main news in the Sun story is that Adonis has filed a complaint against the officer.
