It's the 9th inning of a close contest, and endangered Democratic Rep. Ty Cobb is throwing beanballs. In a cable TV ad, which he at first denied knowing about, Cobb accuses his nutty Republican opponent, Sheila Butt, of favoring the dreaded state income tax. Of course, Butt never actually said that, but who cares?
In Cobb's ad, Butt says, “We are going to have to look at an income tax.”
What Butt actually said during her debate with Cobb was a little different: “We would love to lower our sales taxes, but the fact is if we look at lowering that sales tax then we are going to have to look at an income tax. We will definitely never do that for the state of Tennessee.”
The ad also claims Butt's for coddling illegal immigrants. Actually, Butt said during the debate she favors a guest-worker program. She also said she's for punishing businesses that hire illegal immigrants.
The Columbia Daily Herald examined the claims of both candidates in this story and concluded that both are lying to voters.
