Q: In a lot of your mailers, you guys make a big deal about the Obama-Pelosi agenda. What’s the relevance of that in state legislative races?
Devaney: For example, let’s take the immigration issue. Our federal government is not doing its job on immigration, so if you have to pass legislation in the state to deal with the problem, then you want people who are going to stand up for your values on the state level. So that’s one. Um, health care, for example. There might be issues that we have to deal with at the state level that have to do with ObamaCare, and even our governor, Phil Bredesen, who is a Democrat, said it was going to bankrupt the state. So there might be some things we have to take care of at the state level to deal with ObamaCare. So if the Democrats are in control of things, they’re likely just to let the federal government roll over on us on those issues. So we need people to stand up to the federal government and Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi.
Q: Maybe we should secede.
Devaney: I don’t think we have to do that. We tried that once. But I do think we need people who represent the values of the vast majority of Tennesseans who will stand up on these various issues. That’s why we’re using the Barack Obama-Nancy Pelosi agenda message.
Q: In the mailer you sent against Eddie Yokley, you said there was an Obama-Pelosi-Yokley agenda. Do you really think there’s such a thing?
Devaney: I think in terms of Yokley being a Democrat who’s a rubberstamp for a lot of their policies, absolutely.
Q: You think Eddie Yokley is in communication with Obama and Pelosi and somehow in cahoots with them?
Devaney: Heh. Heh. Yokley votes with the Democrats. You can look at his record. As far as standing up for their agenda, I think he does.
Q: And you criticized Yokley for saying it was OK with him if we took the federal economic stimulus money. Do you think we should have rejected the stimulus money?
Devaney: I’m not going to get into all the policies and this and that. We’re pointing out Eddie’s position on these different issues.
Q: So you’re not going to try to defend your mailers?
Devaney: I am defending it. I’m letting the record stand for itself. People have to make that decision. If they think it’s a good idea to take stimulus money, then they should vote for Eddie Yokley. If they think it was a bad idea for Eddie Yokley to take stimulus money, then they should vote against him. I’m not going to get into the minutia of every little campaign mailer. I’m just saying that’s our basic message, and a pretty good one at that.
