Now we know why Stephen Fincher's handlers have refused to let him anywhere near a reporter lately. The Commercial Appeal's Rick Locker somehow managed to toss an entirely predictable question at Fincher at a campaign stop yesterday in Martin, and the Frog Jump farmer promptly fumbled it. Asked what he would do to help Memphis if elected to Congress, Fincher seemed unaware that any of Memphis is in the Eighth District. Gotcha!

Locker reported it and phoned Fincher's opponent, Roy Herron, for comment. Before the day was over, Herron was slapping his knee over the gaffe at his own campaign event.

“My opponent was in my home county, Weakley County, the first time they let him out from under the wraps, the first time he’s been interviewed by a reporter from Memphis or Jackson or an AP reporter this whole month.” He then warmed to his punch line. “He managed to convey that he did not know that any of the city of Memphis was in the 8th Congressional District. You cannot make this stuff up.”
