“I want to say this without stepping on any toes,” Wamp told assembled party leaders as Haslam, Ramsey and Republican U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker stood near. “The future of this party and this country is not in Nantucket. The future of this party and our country is in Frog Jump, Tenn. What I mean by that is that’s where working families are. And that’s where just good grass-roots people who share our core principles are.”
One of Wamp's campaign operatives insisted the congressman was talking about Barack Obama, who is fond of vacationing at Martha’s Vineyard, the next island over from Nantucket. Right. In that case, why didn't Wamp say the future of the party is not in Martha's Vineyard?
But while the president is no man from Nantucket, Jimmy Haslam owns a home there, and so does Bill Frist. Lamar Alexander used to own land there. Bob Corker visits Jimmy Haslam there. It turns out Bill Haslam is the odd guy out. Isn't that surprising? He says he couldn't find Nantucket on a map. “I don’t hang out there," he says.

Someone please find this nut case a job in another state, away from our city of Chattanooga. Most people that drop out of college, go on cocaine a thons, and have arrest records are not called congressman, how the hay did we let this happen?
Please allow me to educate Mr. Wamp without stepping on his toes...
The people who live on Nantucket Island are hard working, grass-roots people, and if he would like to make an apology- he should do it with his checkbook ...and support the Nantucket Emergency Food Pantry or the Nantucket Emergency Fuel Assistance Fund to help the many islanders who cannot afford food or heat for their homes in the winter. Perhaps if he had ever visited Nantucket, before insulting the entire community, Mr. Wamp might have been able to differentiate between the community, and the summer vacationers.
My son is a student developing wind energy at Nantucket High School. The Town is working on several renewable energy projects, and we have the highest rate of recycling in the country- and perhaps the world. The future of this country CERTAINLY IS in Nantucket.

Pay no attention to Congressman Wamp, Nantucketer. He just lost his race for governor by almost 20 percentage points.
But you'll probably be seeing him in the next couple of years. He'll likely become a Washington lobbyist and will be able to afford a nice house on the 'Sconset end of the island.
Nice post, Barbara. Obviously Mr. Wamp has no calluses on his hands from scalloping in the winter. Perhaps one or two on his gums from flapping them in the breeze.

Nantucketer, if you look back through this blog, you'll see that Wamp is *insane.* Not worth worrying about anything he says since he's not gonna be governor and he's not gonna be in Congress much longer.
The obama clackers sure came out in force on this one. I thought his point was very well-taken, regardless of what kind of political creature he is. Nantucket Island is an economy that exists on the visiting Summer visitors and second home owners, most all of whom are extremely over-funded, whether they be Cadlillac driving Repubs or Limousine Liberals and obama minions. I don't understand the rabid rapid response by the ACORN/Saul Olisnky's of Nantucket with their usual "defining, demonizing and making a mockery of" their political targets. That stuff gets really old. When I lived on the island, it would often go to Repulican Pres. candidates, in spite of having this vocal earthy-crunchy liberal retinue.
The "real America" stuff is of vital issue and importance. The future of the country is not in the two class system of an over-funded idle rich class, who come to Nantucket in the Summer. The "real America" is under-served and over-taxed and it spans both sides of the political aisle. We'd better figure out how to get a majority of Americans working in normal, middle-class jobs - that are not Government jobs.
I agree with "flumoxxxed". All others totally missed Zach Wamp's point. This country was founded by people who worked and fought hard to create a government that reflected their ideals of individual freedoms and rights for all citizens and not just those with enough money to flash their face and name before voters. "Real" Americans need to stop being silent and get involved in the political process again to ensure their rights are protected and that illegal visitors are not rewarded with instant citizenship, free health care, housing and education and that lazy people learn to work and not expect continued handouts. Political parties are outdated; American pride is not!!!
OH! Excuse me????I am not as polite as Barbara Gookin is. I think you forgot that there are actually "real people" who live and work here! And if it wasn't for us, those wealthy mosquitos' would not be able to have their "idle time" on Nantucket, as obviously you were never anything but a visitor! WE ARE REAL AMERICA!!!!!! WE are charged more for any product you could name on the market just because wealthy people visit here. You try making a living here and raising a family and owning a home here . Then and only then, you can actually have permission to speak!
