Wamp Casts Haslam and McWherter as Tweedledum and Tweedledee

Posted by Jeff Woods on Wed, Aug 4, 2010 at 1:33 PM

Both of these guys are for the state income tax.
  • Both of these guys are for the state income tax.
On election eve, Zach Wamp is sounding alarms against the state income tax and slamming Mike McWherter along with Bill Haslam, claiming “both of them are really running on their daddy’s fumes.” At a noontime stop at a Brentwood café, Wamp said:

“Guys, Bill Haslam, his family, frankly, all about a state income tax. There’s not much difference between Mike McWherter and Bill Haslam. That’s a fact. Both of them are really running on their daddy’s fumes. They wouldn’t even be in this game if it weren’t for their fathers. They’re both liberal to moderate on the issues. Both of their families have supported a state income tax in the past. We can’t tolerate a state income tax in this state. I don’t care how bad the economy is. I don’t care how bad the revenues are for the state. Don’t go back there. And with either one of those guys, McWherter or Haslam, the state income tax is back on the table.”

Asked whether he was blowing the income tax threat out of proportion, considering it’s political poison in Tennessee, Wamp said:

“It is very much at risk. Look at the people who are running his campaign now. This is all coming out. This is an unfortunate thing for Tennessee that the income tax could be back on the table. As Steve Gill said on the radio today, we might have to get those horns blowing again and storm the capitol if you make the mistake of nominating Bill Haslam. I don’t believe Tennessee is going to do that. I don’t care how much money he spends. I think they’re on to him. The campaign commercials and all the spending do not match the man or his record.”

More Wamp:

“We’re excited y’all. Just about 30 hours away now. … Little prediction here. Little inside information here. We’re going to carry Shelby County and rural west Tennessee. We are. On the ground we’re very, very strong.”

“It’s going to be hot. It’s going to really hot, and it’s going to be a hot day for the Wamp team tomorrow. We’re going to win this election.”

“Haslam could spend $50 million and not miss a meal. We knew it could just be a bottomless pit. It looks like it’s going to be about $15 million spent by him. That would break the all-time primary record in the state by $6 million. The final $6 million is probably is own money. They’re spending about a million and a half dollars a week now and they’ve gone ruthlessly negative in the last two weeks, which we take as a compliment.”

"We’re about a day away from a surprise to some people, but not to us. This team has built like a group of gypsies all dedicated to a cause. We didn’t have the big money. We didn’t have a corporate jet. We’re rolling around Tennessee today on the ground with the people not flying around like other people will do at 30,000 feet. Our campaign is on the ground with the people. This is about the people and the future of this great state. I’ve never been more encouraged than I am right now."

Do I like Haslam? No. But Zach, here's one big difference between you and Haslam.

Haslam has been spending his own money.

Wamp, you've been spending my money for 16 years for years.

Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany, Joseph Goebbels, had your number long before you were conceived.

Though Goebbels was speaking about the English, it could just as well be you and all the other petty tyrants in government.

". . .follow the principle that when one lies, one should lie big, and stick to it. They keep up their lies, even at the risk of looking ridiculous."

So Zach, did you study history or does it just come natural for you?

"They wouldn’t even be in this game if it weren’t for their fathers."

That's a rich statement! I wouldn't be reading this blog if it weren't for my father (and mother). I guess Wamp was immaculately conceived.

In all seriousness, Wamp is completely full of it (big surprise there). I'm actually in favor of a state income tax, especially if that meant lowering significantly the sales tax. But there is simply no evidence to support Wamp's notion that Haslem or McWherter are secretly planning on implementing a state income tax. Oh, except this: "Both of their families have supported a state income tax in the past." In Wamp's world, that counts as evidence. Neither Haslem nor McWherter have the courage to stir up the legions of Valentine and Gill ditto heads out there. I wish they did but they don't.

Looks like Wamp's got his lackey's, er paid operatives, spinning wildly on Pith. Judging by the grammar and the little time between posts, I'd say it's the same lackey.

Zach is just sounding pathetic and desperate. Oh, and everyone I talked to tonight is writing me in (both of them). Sounds like it might be unanimous.

This whole fiasco is an embarrssment to me and the entire state of rational Tennesseans. We are the brunt of jokes all over the country. The Colbert Report had a ball with our Ramsey's, Wamp's and Marceau's...I had out-of-state company this past week and all they could talk about was the ridiculous ads and comments sprewing out of our governors race. If this is the best we have to offer, people we are in bad trouble!!

Zach - you will not do what your money is trying to do.
