Franklin High Students Protest Flip Flop Ban...FAIL?

Perhaps not filed within the Department of Truth and Consequence, under the heading "Profiles in Courage," Franklin High students — who attend a school in one of the wealthiest counties in the country — have drawn a line in the sand. They're not boycotting a prom that bans same-sex dates. Nor are they protesting massive cuts in state aid to public schools. (Clearly in Franklin this is not a concern.)

They're refusing to obey the new Draconian dress code which bans — the humanity! — flip flops. Truly, flip flops are the "cornerstone," as The Tennessean reports, of every slovenly high school student's wardrobe ... along with frayed ball caps and khaki cargo shorts.

"I always wear flip flops," junior Gabrielle Lamay told Jennifer Brooks of The Tennessean. "I just kind of think (the ban) is dumb." Powerful stuff.

Some 200 students have signed onto a Facebook campaign to flout the dictatorial decree.

Now by God Franklin High School needs to meet this challenge firmly. How about anybody wearing flip-flops on the premises be banned, barred, kicked out of school if a student and denied graduation. Shit, a decree is a decree!

Now lets just get things straight. When rules are declared, best you better listen and obey. If you don't your ass is gonna' be in a sling. That's the way things work in Tennessee. So just pay attention and be obedient. It's for your own good.

What is wrong with the administration in this school? I grew up in a neighborhood where the only people that wore flip flops or house shoes were the ones that would most definitely knock you the hell out if you messed with them, but that was at Stratford in the 90's. My point is where is the freedom, we don't fight for ours and others to not have freedom. Do they let kids play football?

I'm sorry shouldn't they be more concerned with the kids learning something?? I graduated from Franklin. Most of the classes I slept in, because they weren't focused on teaching much of anything. All you Franklin kids keep sporting the flip-flops! And tell em you just want learn.

Okay, maybe in the aging process (since I am 54) somewhere along the line I have lost some brain cells, because I fail to see how wearing flip flops to school is going to take away from ones intellectual capacity. I also, do not see where wearing flip flops would cause any other kind of problems. Is there that much boredom amongst the governing entities of the school that they have decided to start making an issue out of something that really has no bearing on the capacity of someone to learn. Seems to me that today's students are already stressed enough. Try putting yourself in their shoes (God forbid you should put yourself in their flip flops), our society has 5 year olds in school from 8 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon and they have to know what you used to learn in kindergarten before they go to kindergarten, high school students are expected to know what used to be second year college, no one is allowed to pee or sneeze out of turn in our "free society". Good Lord, give the students a break.
