Bredesen Lectures Obama on Politics and Immigration

Gov. Phil Bredesen, the media's go-to Democrat for anti-Obama remarks, was doing it again over the weekend at the White House. This time at a meeting of the National Governors Association, Bredesen castigated the president for taking a principled stand against Arizona's immigration law. When the president does what's right, that makes things way too difficult for Democrats politically, said Bredesen, who shrugged and signed Tennessee's own version of Arizona's law last month.

“Universally the governors are saying, ‘We’ve got to talk about jobs,’ ” Bredesen said. “And all of a sudden we have immigration going on.”

He added, “It is such a toxic subject, such an important time for Democrats.”

More from the New York Times article:

Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico praised the Justice Department’s lawsuit, saying his fellow Democrats’ concerns were “misguided.”

“Policy-wise it makes sense,” said Mr. Richardson, who is Hispanic and who leaves office this year on term limits, “and Obama is popular with Hispanic voters and this is going to be a popular move with them nationally.”

But Mr. Bredesen said that in Tennessee, where the governor’s race will be tight this year, Democratic candidates were already on the defensive about the federal health care overhaul, and the suit against Arizona further weakened them. In Tennessee, he said, Democratic candidates are already “disavowing” the immigration lawsuit.

“Maybe you do that when you’re strong,” he said of the suit, “and not when there’s an election looming out there.”

You always can count on Bredesen to act just like his role model Bobby Kennedy. Because you know RFK would have rolled over for all the little anti-immigration bigots all over America if it made political sense. Kennedy's friend César Chávez would have been all for Arizona's law too.

Fox News really loved Bredesen's comments. The headline: "Governors: Obama's Immigration Suit Is 'Toxic.' " Has it occurred to Bredesen that it's also not especially helpful for Democrats politically for a certain Democratic governor to publicly undermine the president constantly because he likes to see his name in the New York Times?

Well I guess the moderate Repubs like Gov B cause he's just another Rich guy who kind of thinks like they do when if comes to money (most of it belongs in their pockets!) and kind of thinks like somebody who can ,You know, like read and stuff. They also like the fact that he's been a complete disaster for the Tn Democratic party. If we had a real political party, we might have candidates and an informational opportunity from time to time. By the way, who's replacing that Blue Dog Dino, John Tanner in David Crockett's seat?

That's right wvfii!!!!! Laugh all you want libtard loser! Connie, you go girl! The teleprompter will be THE issue in the 2012 election! I think I see... Dems obtain "bipartisan" status when they fall right in line with Right-of-center GOP talking points.

Yep, there's our President, always using that dadgummed teleprompter. Of course, there was that other guy who lied so he could start a $733,170,373,794 (and counting!!) war. But *phew* a teleprompter! what a bastard!

I live in Tennessee, and although I did not vote for Bredesen, he has done a great job for Tennessee. He criticized the health care bill because he based his judgment on the fact that TennCare is a failure in Tennessee. He has not been a partisan divider like Obama, but instead he has united the Democrats and Republicans. I am a Republican, but Bredesen has governed in a bipartisan manner. Obama could learn some lessons from Bredesen on how to govern. Unfortunately, we now have a president with no experience, so no wonder he is inept and only can read from a teleprompter.

Maybe the President is stupid. The alternative is to consider the possibility he is putting what is right above political expedience, and that is not politics as usual. The problem blue dogs are having is a dearth of moral courage amplified by an election year.

The Republicans have done so much to pump Democrats' approval ratings among Latinos, it does seem kind of unfair for Obama to pile on.

"Bredesen castigated the president for taking a principled stand against Arizona's immigration law."

Ha!

Very fummy.

Obama isn't taking a "principled stand" on anything.

Obama is enganging in a purely political exercise to try and pump the Democrats approval rating with Latinos before the November mid-term elections.

"Millions of US dollors are being sent out of this country every hour by illegal immigrants who contribute littloe or nothing to our economy and yet drain it for all they can get. This drain is stopping any recovery that might happen."

I'm definitely wasting my time pointing out how utterly ridiculous statements like these are. To say that illegal immigrants contribute little to none economically is extremely devoid of reality. Rhino1960, if you could magically ship them all home tomorrow, not only is the economy not going to get better, it will get much worse. Not might, but will. Dude, tune out the tea party and Fox News, Glen Beck and Limbaugh, and rejoin reality. It's a better place.

Same lack of statesmanship from the Governor who reintroduced the term "coolies" to the Chinese

Who would Mr. Bredesen be if he didn't go backwoods once in a while?

Holy shit. Was there a "who can make the most blatantly ridiculous and vile comment on the internet" contest and I missed the announcement.

There you go, Bredesen, you have successfully kissed the ass of a guy who claims he cannot tell the difference between a Mexican and a Persian and he expects everyone secretly agrees.

What a proud moment for Tennessee Democrats. I'm sure we'll win a ton of elections now that folks like Rhino1960 know they can count on us to reach out to them.

Phil Bredesen represents Tennessee and has always done a great job. He is continuing that job by voicing the opinions of his constituents and analysing the political turmoil created by President Obama's actions. I am a Democrat and I am sorry but I side with Jan Brewer and Phil Bredesen on this one. And to dishonor Bobby Kennedy and Cesar Chavez just shows what a lowlife dirtball Jeff Woods really is for making those comments in his post of this article. Can anyone say fertilizer?

Tell me, Woodsey, when you are pulled over by a Metro policeman while weaving your way home after a night out on the left bank with your lib/dem buddies and the policeman asks to see your driver's license, is that the same as demanding to see "your papers" and is that also profiling since the policeman may know from past experience that many cars seen weaving are operated by drunk drivers?

Bredesen's comments are superfluous. The only thng Obama could do that might sway voters for whom immigration is a priority issue would be to announce a mass roundup and deportation. The people who are enraged about the lawsuit against Arizona were not going to vote for McWherter in any event.

It sounds like Bredesen's solution is just to pretend the immigration issue doesn't exist. But we already knew that Bredesen is not exactly a profile in courage.

I realize that pointing out lies and slants by Fox News can be an all-consuming task. Still, it's at least worth noting that Bredesen's quote was contorted (deliberately). He said the immigration issue is toxic. He did not say that the Justice Dept. lawsuit was toxic.

Which is it, Pith?

1. Should Bredesen be political and not criticize the president?

2. Should Bredesen be political and criticize the president for needlessly igniting a debate that could hurt his party during an election?

You're talking out of both sides of your mouth.

"But Mr. Bredesen said that in Tennessee, where the governor’s race will be tight this year,"

I guess "tight" is a relative term, though I'd say a 25 point deficit would not fit most people's definition of a "tight" race.

Even better, the fool made Fox. With Democrats like this, it's no wonder Tennessee politics are in the hands of the Hatfields and McCoys. Hillbillies and carpetbaggers working together at last. What a state. Grab your ankles and bend over.
