House Dems Ready to Raid Rainy Day Fund

Democrats say its raining in Tennessee.
  • Democrats say it's raining in Tennessee.
House Democrats have just offered their own alternative state budget plan. They'd raid the state's rainy day fund to eliminate all the Senate Republican cuts, which were made to plug the holes created by eliminating all the governor's proposed tax hikes. Are you following this? It took Senate Republicans a month to come up with their plan. We think the House Democrats scribbled out theirs on a damp cocktail napkin last night at Morton's. Says House Democratic leader Gary Odom:

The budget proposal offered by Senate Republicans is unacceptable and shows a fundamental lack of compassion for Tennesseans. What Tennesseans need is a budget that will lead them to recovery, not ruin.

Out of the rainy day fund, Democrats say they would restore $34 million in teacher pay cuts, $6 million in cuts in farm investments, $100 million in state employee pay bonuses and $3.5 million in cuts to public safety.

"Our rainy day fund is for a rainy day," says Speaker Pro Tem Lois DeBerry, "and here in Tennessee it's raining."
