Lawmakers Showboat for the Pro-Life Crowd

The state Senate just voted 28-2 to force medical offices where abortions are performed to post this sign in 40-point type:

"Notice: It is against the law for anyone, regardless of the person's relationship to you, to coerce you into having or to force you to have an abortion. By law, we cannot perform an abortion on you unless we have your freely given and voluntary consent. It is against the law to perform an abortion on you against your will. You have the right to contact any local or state law enforcement agency to receive protection from any actual or threatened criminal offense to coerce an abortion."

The bill, which is on the House floor this afternoon, fines clinics $2,500 and physicians $1,000 for every day the sign isn't posted conspicuously in patient waiting areas.

The bill's advocates say the signs are needed because many women are pressured to have abortions by Planned Parenthood counselors, the men in their lives and others. In a House committee, lawmakers rejected an amendment to make the sign also say that it's illegal to coerce a woman not to have an abortion.

Only Sens. Beverly Marrero, D-Memphis, and Andy Berke, D-Chattanooga, voted no. There was no debate. But in a Commercial Appeal oped, Marrero pointed out:

We all know this legislation is purely political, designed to increase the anti-abortion bona fides of lawmakers up for re-election this year. It is in the same vein as the Tennessee Health Freedom Act, a bill that purports to supersede the federal health care reform signed into law by President Barack Obama last week.

As lawmakers continue to posture and position themselves for the campaign trail, Tennesseans continue to suffer from prolonged unemployment, thinly stretched budgets and even foreclosure and bankruptcy.

Update: The House passed the bill this afternoon by a vote of 87-8. There was no debate.

Forcing women to give birth, on the other hand, is just fine.

Can they post it in an amusing font? Nothing says "THE LAW" quite like Comic Sans. Will the signs will only be in English? Do they care about the rights of the Spanish-speaking women who might be unfairly and illegaly coerced into abortion by all of those sinister nurses?

All just as true. The only difference is the jackasses at the legislature would never vote to require that sign be posted.

I want signs up in the office of every OB/GYN pointing out that it's against the law for anyone to force a person to have a child; we know that abusive partners often do so as a way to control the women in their lives, and those women need this service. Will the TN legislature step up to the challenge?

Let's weed out the real baby killers now "serving" (the alochol industry) within the Tennessee General Assembly...
I think that it very informative to cross check the TNGA Senate and House members who voted for this sign language against the same TNGA members who gratefully accepted campaign contributions from the liquor, beer, wine, and related retailers and wholesalers as alcohol contributes to spontaneous abortions.

Yeah, I have not been involved in the real estate trade for too long, but I know enough to say when its time to hurl in the towel. Right now with the way the economy is headed, I genuinely don't know what to think.
