Need a Dog? This One Could Use Your Help

Posted by Jim Ridley on Tue, Mar 16, 2010 at 5:00 AM

This arrived overnight in the Scene's mailbox:

To the editor,

Last week, a friend of mine witnessed a man in a black truck dump a garbage bag into Mill Creek along Culbertson Road (off Nolensville Road). At first, she thought nothing of it. Then she realized that a dog who had plainly just given birth was desperately jumping up on the cab of the truck and then chasing it as it sped off. My friend was unable to get a tag number.

The next day, she saw the poor mother dog staring into the creek where her pups were drowned. The dog held vigil there for 2 days and 2 nights before a group of us was able to lure her into one of our cars and get her to our vet, PetMed on Bell Road. (The vet confirmed that the dog, who is less than a year old herself, had just given birth.) We got FOX17 News to do a story which aired last Thursday (March 11). The story shows the dog both at the creek and later at the vet.

We have temporarily named the dog Bella. Little Bella, who appears to be a pit bull/lab mix, is boarding at PetMed until this Friday (March 19). She has been dewormed and has had the necessary shots. She will be spayed this week. We have no idea where she's going when she's released on Friday, but a local trainer has agreed to work with Bella and her new owners free of charge.

This dog has lived through so much in her short life and has come a long way. She is beginning to trust again and obviously deserves a good home. Any chance you could get the word out somehow, if not in The Scene -- I realize you are not a dog-rescue service! -- at least maybe to your staff. I know that Walter Jowers just lost Rufus. Maybe he would be interested in Bella? (Just a thought.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Susan L. Comer

Yesterday afternoon I was at the West End Dog Park and apparently a woman dumped a dog at the park, and by dumped I mean, placed it in the enclosure and then drove away not to be seen again.
???
What the hell are people thinking? There IS an animal shelter here. No one will judge you for taking your dog to the shelter. If it doesn't get adopted it will at least be euthanized "relatively" humanely. Certainly better than starving to death or shivering in the rain and cold.
Damn.

Heartbreaking, sickening, disgraceful. I'm ashamed of the human race sometimes. I pray that Bella finds the home she deserves.. and oh yeah, that Mr. Black Pickup rots in hell.
Southern Beale, do you know what happened to the dog that was left at the Dog Park? Is he/she still there? Description? I go by there on my way home...

When the image is finished and has dried for up to a year, an artist often seals the work with a layer of varnish that is typically made from damar gum crystals dissolved in turpentine. Such varnishes can be removed without disturbing the oil painting itself, to enable cleaning and conservation. Some contemporary artists decide not to varnish their work, preferring that the surfaces remain varnish-free.
