'Nashville 99' -- A Long-Lost '70s Cop Show in Music City? What?

Posted by Ashley Spurgeon on Fri, Feb 12, 2010 at 12:40 PM

I like to pride myself on my knowledge of pop culture detritus, but I have recently been shamed, for I had never heard of Nashville 99. Has anyone? Apparently it was a cop drama starring Claude Akins and Jerry Reed that ran from April 1977 to April 1977. That's right: one month. I heard The Belcourt ran an episode when they were doing their fake drive-in series, but I can't find any clips online other than the theme song and a brief musical performance in one of the four episodes. If you know anything about the show, please let me know. This is obviously really important.

So, even back then, cops couldn't afford to live in the city?

"Nashville 99's" three episode run occurred right after star Claude Akins came off his previous successful show, "Movin' On."
"Movin' On" was created by Philip D'Antoni, who also produced "Bullitt," "The French Connection," and "The Seven Ups," all with great driving/chase scenes - which were supposed to be a key element of "Nashville 99."
"Movin' On" was about truck drivers, and was based, in part, on the huge popularity of the country music novelty song "Convoy."
The perfect circle.

Yes, we screened every episode (there were four) in our Second Saturday Summer Drive-In series exactly two summers ago (only "fake" in that it's in a parking lot, not a field!) . We're sorry that you missed it! Each episode had a different star as a key player in the solving of the crime (Ray Stevens, Chet Atkins, Mel Tillis and Tammy Wynette). Ned Beatty, Johnny Paycheck, Don Johnson had roles a/o cameos as well. Fantastic time capsule type of stuff (also see WW AND THE DIXIE DANCEKINGS)...who knows: it might resurface again in some design or another. 16mm prints do reside within a mile of our building.

Correction to my last: three episodes and a pilot.

Can't help with that one, but the full pilot with Jerry Reed and Tom Selleck (right before he left to do Magnum) of Concrete Cowboys that was filmed in Nashville about the same time, is available at the link below. The show has a great scence in the Union Station BEFORE it was restored. It's (link) all shows and movies that the copyright has expired on, so enjoy.

Talked to the guy on YouTube (as did pinehart above) and he said he had bought copies off the original 16mm films but he has stopped responding to both of us. I am interested in Episode #4 which starred Sharon Wyatt in her first role. Belcourt, who would we contact about the 16mm films which are located within a mile of your building?

I am a huge Jerry Reed fan and bought DVD copies from original (and quite deteriorated) film of the four episodes of Nashville 99. For me it's a really enjoyable series, produced by Ernie Frankel who produced Ironside and Perry Mason (also later Concrete Cowboys), so I would recommend getting hold of copies if you can. I got mine from a seller on iOffer - though I would stress that it is a UNAUTHORISED copy ;-)
It's a real shame it never went any further, as I think it was quite a fresh, interesting idea at the time with likeable regular characters and, of course, musical greats the likes of Tammy Wynette and Ray Stevens, as well as legend Jerry Reed as Trace Mayne, the young Dectective who works closely with main character Stony Huff.
