Blackburn Defends Budget-Slashing Plan

Posted by Jeff Woods on Mon, Feb 8, 2010 at 6:44 PM

Here's Rep. Marsha Blackburn talking about the radical new GOP plan to privatize both Medicare and Social Security. Congressman Paul Ryan, the ranking Republican on the House Budget Committee, put forth these ideas in his budget-slashing proposal last week, and Blackburn is one of the co-sponsors of his bill. Under the plan, seniors on Medicare get vouchers to buy private insurance. But there's a catch--the value of the vouchers won't increase at the rate health care costs are projected to go up. Here's Ezra Klein's analysis:
It's hard, given the constraints of our current debate, to call something "rationing" without being accused of slurring it. But this is rationing, and that's not a slur. This is the government capping its payments and moderating their growth in such a way that many seniors will not get the care they need.

Sounds like they want to grab defeat out of the jaws of victory again.
With the baby-boomers coming of age health care cost are bound to explode. You can't put those who will need the health care the most into a pool with frozen payments.
Bush tried and the dems resisted now the pubs are in the minority so they should sit back and let those in power do what they have to do. Its their baby and they shouldn't get in the way of their self destruction and try (and will fail) to get them off the hook.
This plan as scecthy as it is sounds like a loser that will meet the same kind of resistance as barrys plan did. Stay on the sidelinesand work on a plan that will work and use it for the elections in 12.
Springing this on the public after what we have been through and so close to the elections is stupid and would encourage a third party.

Next for the lady: repeal those pesky child labor laws, that intrusive 40 hour week, that intrusive unemployment insurance, the minimum wage (of course), and if you don't come in on Sunday, don't come in on Monday.
Great gawd-amighty, her employers will be Free at Last!
Fun fact: With a simple return to chatel slavery, America's competitiveness in the world markets would be simply spectacular! No more exporting of jobs!

Idgaf says: "With the baby-boomers coming of age health care cost are bound to explode."
That's right, and what are you and your "fiscally responsible" Republican heroes doing, id?
Saying NO to anything and everything coming from the Democrats. Even though their bills would reign in healthcare costs, give breaks to small businesses, expand Medicare coverage to more people, and actually cut the deficit within 10 years.
Don't pretend like you and the rest of you right-wing traitors care about the cost of healthcare. If you did, you would be participating in a reasoned debate instead of lying about the bills or refusing to do anything at all.

YEh, just what we need more services turned over to FOR PROFIT private sectors. Do we really think we can trust a For Profit insurance to care and ensure we are taking care of medicare and SSI? Are we nutz, have we learned anything from the banks or the Loan mess we are in? Gee we cut regulation after regulation for the last 20 years and what did they do, they screwed us!
Dont you think we are forgetting that too soon in turning over SSI and medicare to private insurance? We are asking for more trouble people, do we not like SSI and Medicare now? Then why mess it up just find a way to fund it, end a war or two or end this failed drug policy that flushes billions away each year, for the last 38years! The money is there we just need to drop things that are wasting money like the Drug War!

I didn't realize that Republicans could possibly sink this low. To paraphrase a line from John Dean's Blind Ambition, they are "lower than dog-shit." That is a quote from J. Edgar Hoover, of all people. What will happen to all those people over 65 who are given vouchers to buy private insurance? I know of people who are younger than that who lost their private insurance because they had cancer. I hope that they run Sarah Palin for president. Granted, too many of the American people are gullible. But I can't believe that they would someone in the White House who thought that Africa is a country. Or who could not name a single founding father. What about George Washington, you dummy?
