House Speaker Kent Williams all but declared the governor's cable TV tax dead today. That's bad news for the state's criminal justice system. By raising the sales tax on cable bills, the administration hopes to collect $21 million. It's part of a plan to prevent 200 layoffs involving prosecutors, public defenders and probation officers, among others. Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey and House GOP leader Jason Mumpower have objected to the tax increase too. The House speaker threw down on it during his weekly sit-down with reporters:
"I can't see it going anywhere. I may be wrong. It's a shame to say but it's an election year. It couldn't pass last year. I think it'll be really difficult to pass anything this year."

But Williams gave the thumbs up to the governor's proposed driver's license fee increase. Fees would go from $19.50 every five years to $46 every eight years, with the money saving 85 state trooper jobs, plus 56 jobs in state driver's license stations.

"The driver's license I don't have any problem at all. One of the big complaints I get from constituents is the time it takes to renew your driver's license. I know you can go online and renew. But you get in the rural areas and, especially with the elderly, they don't have computers. This will actually improve services because you're renewing every eight years instead of every five years. And I don't think we can afford to lose state troopers. It sure is nice when there's a need or an accident to have a trooper close by. I think it'll pass. There's always some opposition but probably 75 percent of the members don't have a problem."

Heck, my Comcast bill goes up every year far more than that tax would make it go up.

Comcast made $1B last quarter. They are raping ratepayers and their service still sucks. Make them suck up the cost of the tax. They'll increase their rates more than this in the next month or so anyway.

Oh the Irony! Gov Bredesen asks for a $1.35 tax increase on cable to be used for higher ed. and to preserve 200 jobs among prosecutors, public defenders, probation officers and foresters. Rep. House Speaker, Kent Williams says "Let the courts work it out. That's why we have a judicial system."
Gov Bredesen says tax on cable would PRESERVE 200 jobs. Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey disagrees with tax, instead says the state must reduce spending and encourage JOB CREATION.
