New York's Ford-Haters Bashing Tennessee

They're bashing Tennessee, along with Harold Ford Jr., in the comment section of this blog post in the New York Times. WTF? What did we do to deserve this? Ford's a hick like all Tennesseans, the commenters say, and a vapid blowhard like that other famous Tennessean, Fred Thompson. A sampling of the ridicule follows, then finally a post in defense of our fair state. Hey New York, ever hear of Adolph Ochs? * Mr. Ford was anointed a congressman as a result of his father's holding the seat he inherited. He believes he is entitled to respect just because he was a congressman from another state. Mr. Ford has to learn the people of New York State bestow respect onto people who earn it-not just people who ask for it. He should go back to Tennessee. * Harold, face it - you're a carpetbagger, pure and simple. You came up here because you thought that if Obama can do it, so can you. Plus, you couldn't get elected dog catcher in your home state. * I do have a problem with this backwoods, smooth talking hick claiming to represent me. * Harold Ford Jr. reminds me a little bit of someone else from Tennessee: Fred Thompson. In both cases, you wait . . . and you wait . . . and you wait . . . and then you get bored and realize the fuss is over nothing. * Why is the New York Times pushing this snake oil salesman from Tennessee? * Y'all don't bash Tennessee TOO much now. We can understand you may not want one of our native sons representing you in the United States Senate -- especially one who seems to change political positions as easily as longitudes and latitudes -- BUTwe have contributed considerably to magnificent culture. (No, not tractor pulls at the Garden.) For starters, how about the Adolph Ochs, the Chattanoogan who bought a third-rate newspaper and made it into The Times we all know and love.

Colbert Report names Ford 'Alpha Dog of the Week.' (this video is actually funny, as opposed to a certain recent Hitler video)

It's unfair: There are so many better reasons to dislike Ford's candidacy (starting with the fact that he seems more like a Republican than a Democrat).
On the other hand, even a hick from flyover land like me knows the difference between a "shmear" and a "smear." Keep Ford away from the bagels.

Seems to me the most interesting aspect of this is this statement from TN Democratic Party Chair...
“Harold Ford Jr. is a bold, independent and progressive leader who has championed Democratic causes his entire political life,” Forrester said. “If you examine his record in Congress, it was pro labor, pro choice, pro environment and pro civil rights."
So, seems to me the next Democratic candidate should be, hmm, pro labor, pro choice, pro environment, pro civil rights, and (through in young Ford's thing) pro gay marriage.
Now that is a Democratic candidate we could use down here...

Fairness has nothing to do with anything where New York politics is concerned. Things political become a feeding frenzy in the world of Big Apple press and media. They are pack animals. Only real power will overcome, and nobody too much cares where the power comes from.

Not clear that there (their) is much fairness in TN politics either. I had a Ford sign and a NO ON PROP 1 sign in my yard in 2006, and I was considered a traitor to the Democratic party. Now, turns out, the guy was pro gay marriage. Imagine that?! Maybe TN politics isn't about fairness, it is just about mendacity.

Since Ford is leading the TN-bashing ("oh, I couldn't be a real Democrat there; the state is so backwards"), why blame New Yorkers for following his lead?

New York elected a senator who parachuted in from Arkansas, so they really don't have much to get all huffy about now.

Tennessee hates Ford because he is black. New York does not like Ford becasue he is from Tennessee - which they think are all right wing Bush Butt Kissers - which they are.
So why would New Yorkers not want to elect someone who the right wingnuts from Tennessee would not?
