Council Vote Aftermath: Who Should Fear Retribution?

Here's the question of the hour: Will tonight's vote for the Music City Center come back to bite anyone on the Metro Council? The council has just voted for Mayor Karl Dean's financing plan. Yawn. Did we really need to say that? (FYI, the vote was 29-9.) Leaving our competitors in the dust as usual, Pith is already shifting into Analysis Mode. Naysayers are threatening to start petition drives to recall the Music City Center's supporters for currying favor with the bizpigs in audacious defiance of the public will. (Remember that Channel 4 poll?) No one gives this talk much credence, even though the notorious anti-tax crusader Ben Cunningham is offering to help with the recall petitions. As one hireling of the bizpigs told Pith:
Recall petitions are time limited. You need an opposition candidate, and the recall campaigns aren't cheap. Ben doesn't even live in Davidson County anymore. ... In my opinion, Ben doesn't give a shit by Wednesday morning. There's also nothing to generate lasting anger among opponents. No tax increase. Nothing coming out of their pockets. By Wednesday morning, most of Nashville will have put MCC behind them.
But what about the council members who voted no? Could they face retribution? Richard Lawson, the business flack now masquerading as an Internet newsman, makes that case on his website Nashville Chatter Class. In a brazen column in which he all but claims to speak for the city's power elite, Lawson declares bizpigs will kneecap Mike Jameson, Eric Crafton, Michael Craddock and Emily Evans for daring to oppose this project. According to Lawson, these council members will deserve whatever comes their way:
Some dissent and skepticism is expected. Vociferous nitpicking and opposition based on selective interpretation and use of facts, however, is a non-starter for politicians when it comes to the city's business community. And, the business community here is very good at ostracizing a politician seen as wayward or simply opposing projects for the sake of playing the game.
In Evans' case, it's "a double whammy," Lawson warns, because she also fought that other great business idea of the early 21st century: May Town Center. Whoa, she's really in trouble now. Update: The no votes were Michael Craddock, Jamie Hollin, Mike Jameson, Jim Gotto, Eric Crafton, Emily Evans, Jason Holleman, Randy Foster and Robert Duvall. Update II: Joey Garrison reports.

So who voted for and who against?

I'm pretty sure Jason Holleman voted no.

Yes, Holleman voted no. The list is posted now.

Glad to see that the vote failed to put an end to craven anonymous sniping. Nothing will rally the city to the cause faster than chest-beating and gloating in the service of character assassination.

Holleman voted no after voting yes in committee. I guess he wants it both ways.

One should certainly hope so starting with the shoplifter.
Running against anyone who voted to steal our money and throw it away certainly is an advantage.
Already they added 250 million to the cost for work on the old CC.
This turkey (if it is not stopped with legal action) is over a BILLION already and the hotel will cost at least another 1/2 Billion.

Jeff ... Masquerading? So I guess I wouldn't be out of line suggesting that you are masquerading as an alternative news weekly newsman... Tsk, tsk. And talk about creative writing ... All in good fun I suppose. As for the political outcome, you've been around politics to know how the politics will play out. Just wait and see. Most of those opponents in the past year fought against $5 billion in economic development. What do you expect to happen with the so-called bizpigs? Rollover and say gosh, those folks are correct, Nashville doesn't need to grow or produce more jobs so the city can just become a shell?

What happened was that the great majority of the Council members were secretly kidnapped and hypnotized by the evil henchmen (bizpigs are not into feminist issues) of the bizpigs. Surely, you have seen them around town. They wear little black masks over their eyes and uniforms with shoulder patches portraying an angry looking pig smoking a cigar and wearing a pinstriped suit.
These poor hypnotized Council members have been made to vote against what is surely their wills for something designed to . . . well, we just don't know what the bizpigs had in mind as they are an inscrutable lot. After all, once otherwise normal human beings take on the bizpig oath they lose all human thought and only exist to anger certain journalists.
I mean, really. Bizpigs cannot possibly have the best interests of anyone at heart. That would mean they have to be treated as more than one dimensional targets for sophomoric gibes.

Knowing the voter fellings of this I
suggest those voting "yes" would and
should feel the most heat come election
time. Our original "Metro Government
GODFATHERS" did make sure the real power
was in the Executive Branch versus the
Legislative Branch by creating so many
districts and staggering those elections.
Democratic rule is often anything but!

Jeff,
The grapes must taste very sour for you today. Please try and not confuse opinion with analysis but if you must analyze tell us this. How can Nashville Priorities,(the voice of the people) come up with 65% less signatures than they originally predicted (8700 vs. 25,000) and still want us to believe that less than 3% of the registered voters in Davidson County is a mandate of the people. Maybe they failed to get the wording correct and should have asked Channel 4 for further instructions.

Your epithets and rancor undermine any points you may make. Where is civility and respect for the officials that WE elected? Show some manners, please, rather than contributing to the howling that demeans our public debate and democratic process.

The convention center needs to be downtown, not at Opryland. Nobody wants to drive over there. Downtown needs to remain the heart of Nashville.
