In apparent retaliation for the Music City Center, Gaylord is refusing to pay its $20,000 yearly membership dues in the Chamber of Commerce. Gaylord lobbyist Tom Ingram insists in an interview with The City Paper that the membership kerfuffle is unrelated to the proposed convention center. Does anyone believe that? ... The special session is rocking 'n' rolling toward a Friday finish now that the governor has struck a deal with the teachers' union. Here's the compromise in a nutshell and coverage from Erik Schelzig ... Chas Sisk ... Tom Humphrey ... Andy Sher ... and Rick Locker. Many teachers are unhappy, but the governor claims their union is enthusiastically on board:
"One of the pitches I've made to them is don't just say, 'OK, we're not going interfere with the legislation,' and then be passive-aggressive about it for the next four years. I don't want to do this butting heads with the teachers, who I feel so strongly are the core part of the system."
How about a tax on handgun permits? In that case, maybe we need a Vermont-style law letting every citizen go armed with no permit required. ... Tourism officials in Nashville and Memphis say the guns-in-bars law is keeping away visitors. "Gosh, is it dangerous around here?" ... Tennessee consumer spending drops again ... and so do state tax collections. ... In Cocke County, the moonshine capital of Tennessee, they want to license liquor distilleries for some reason. ... A judge orders Rep. Stacey Campfield to return an ex-tenant's $400 security deposit. ... Frank Cagle explains why legislators act the fool every year. ... Congressman Steve Cohen headlines the pro-legalization Marijuana Policy Project's 15th annual gala and shares the stage with Cheech and Chong:
"Most of my colleagues didn't want to be here and aren't here. Maybe that says something about my political judgment," Cohen joked to a few hundred people at the $250-per-plate dinner, where sponsors displayed pot "vaporizers" and hemp clothing.

At least there is one Representative out there without his head up there but. The drug war costs a fortune and is an utter failure. Also according to 2 of the latest national polls the Zogby and Angus Reid showed that the Majority of Americans believe Marijuana should be legalized. Way to go Rep. Steve Cohen.
