Special Session Stirs Up Tennessee Secessionists

  • Will Tennessee legislators follow Gov. Rick Perry's lead?
So Texas Gov. Rick Perry is telling the federal government to take a hike: His state will refuse to compete for up to $700 million in Race to the Top money for education. That'll teach those Washington liberals! Perry says Texas "reserves the right to decide how we educate our children and not surrender that control to the federal bureaucracy." Damn right! How long before our own wacky secessionists in the legislature--and there are many--rise up and demand that we tell Barack Obama to stick it. Who needs hundreds of millions of dollars in federal cash anyway? There have been signs of insurrection already: During a committee hearing this week, Sen. Douglas Henry, apparently forgetting again which century he's living in, said: "I think the whole scheme is patently unconstitutional." But then he admitted "there's too much money not to go with it." Senate GOP leader Mark Norris says, "I'm worried about the federal hook, about federal overreaching and encroachment." And there's this from Rep. Frank Niceley, an Obama birther from Strawberry Plains: "I see this as just the final straw that the federal government is taking over now." It gives Pith in the Wind new hope for something spicy to happen in this otherwise ridiculously boring special session.

When will the people of TN ever elect people with some working grey matter? The State Legislature doesn't even try to pretend to work for their Constituents anymore.
They get crazier and crazier with each session.

I've wondered many times before: where were all these guys, as well as the Tea-Party types, when W, the first Bush, Reagan, etc were running up huge deficits and spending like there wasn't a tomorrow? I know the answer to my question. They were cheer-leading it. Reagan, despite being one of the biggest federal government presidents in history, is their hero. They are team players, that's what they are, and the Republicans are their team.

I'm the furthest from Tea-Party and it would be great for TN to get the money, but I do hope we're mostly focused on good educational policy and not just on writing policy to get the cash - the two might not necessarily be the same!

Secession? Works for me. Then we can reinstitute chattel slavery. May I suggest gays this time? Then we'll find out real fast whether it's a choice or not.

It's not just the South wanting to secede. Just look at Vermont. http://www.sphere.com/politics/article/vermont-candidates-join-growing-secessionist-ranks/19315386
Regardless of political affiliation, people are tired of the government meddling in their lives. I think it's unfair to only assume it's conservatives.

In case you didn't know, Texas is in the process of updating its textbooks and designing state end-of-course exams that align to the new curriculum, a process that is costing them about $3 billion. Why should they scrap that for a piece of a $700 million pie? I suggest you do us all a favor and not write a blog if you can't even get all the facts on issues prior to publishing it.
Education is a state issue, it's always been a state issue, and the federal government, although it tries time and time again, has no business dictating academic standards or curriculum to states.
