Morning Roundup: Heartbreaking and Hilarious

Heartbreaking: Mall Santas are having to figure out what to say to kids who want things like coats and jobs for their parents and toilet paper... Forty animals taken from a home in Bedford County are looking for new places to live... Today is the one-year anniversary of the Kingston Coal Ash Spill. Today also marks the one-year anniversary of the start of TVA's massive public relations disaster, in which the people affected by the spill were lied to, misled, had hollow promises made to them, and were treated like an inconvenience. The spill was bad enough. The treatment of people in the area was appalling. ... Hilarious: A woman in Maury County tried to smuggle prescription drugs and tobacco into the jail in a Bible. Money quote? "All it takes is finding one Bible that's packed full of tobacco, weed, pills, whatever, and you never look at a Bible the same." Amen, Chaplain Boggs, amen. ... The Tennessee Tribune this week has in its lead story a lead paragraph so refreshingly honest in its bias towards self-preservation that I insist you take a moment to read it (warning: PDF). ...
