Morning Roundup: Food Bank Shortages, Career Opportunities and Vaccine News

Posted by on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 8:00 AM

An unfortunate side effect of a recession that creates more struggling citizens is that there are also fewer unaffected citizens to help those in need. And when it comes to putting food on the table, demand is up and supply is down for donations to help feed needy families this season. Second Harvest of Middle Tennessee was shooting for gathering the food to make 7 million meals to feed a growing population of folks in need, and they're short 4 million meals. ... A job is a job, especially now, but that doesn't mean you can't still afford a healthy dose of skepticism. Walmart is hiring for 150 positions for its new Dickerson Road store--just beware of some of their practices, like giving demerits for calling in sick. Speaking of jobs, a good number of tour buses originate out of Nashville, so it's no surprise that Nashville is offering a Celebrity Bus Drivers Academy to train drivers for this exciting career opportunity. A guess: Only discreet drivers need apply? And speaking of discretion, beware a secret shopper scam that left a Nashville couple around $2,000 poorer. Over 80,000 doses of the recently recalled H1N1 vaccine were used in Tennessee, but apparently it's no big deal. The hot prob was that the vaccines--which were given to children age 6 months up to 3 years old, weren't really strong enough by about 12% potency, except it still was strong enough to protect them, so you're totally covered. (This CNN story says children of that age range--up to 3 years old--would have been instructed to get two shots several weeks apart, so that second shot would take care of the lower potency issue of the first.) ... A federal class-action lawsuit filed over charges of chronic cronyism in Wilson County? What? No! Well, I never! ... Calling all local filmmakers: Want more Hollywood in Nashville? This April meeting could do the trick.
