Send Aunt B. to the High Seas!

Posted by Jim Ridley on Wed, Dec 2, 2009 at 10:55 AM

Ahoy, mateys! No one was more surprised than our very own Pith contributor Betsy "Aunt B." Phillips when she found out she and her blog Tiny Cat Pants had been nominated to win a free slot aboard a cruise to the Mexican Riviera sponsored by Air America Media. If all goes well, Aunt B. will be sipping fruity drinks with Gov. Howard Dean, playing shuffleboard with Rachel Maddow, bellowing sea chanteys with Ron Reagan and Robert Kennedy Jr., etc. Out of 4,000 entries, Aunt B. currently stands at an amazing No. 13--behind front runner Karl Frisch of Media Matters, but two steps ahead of Daily Kos! (The Andrew Sullivan Bump didn't hurt.) That's where you come in. Before the first round of voting closes at 4 p.m. tomorrow, go to the official contest site and fill out a nomination ballot for Aunt B. You can then vote on the top five, to be announced Friday. If you love Aunt B. as we do, you'll want to flood every social networking orifice Air America has to fill. And if you're a godless commie who hates Mom, apple pie, Old Glory and Aunt B.--well, fill out a ballot and relish the thought of sending Tiny Cat Pants into pirate-infested waters.

Filling an Air America orifice is my dream.

You and Gilbert should get a cabin together.

You have a terribly sick mind, pinko.
I did not identify a specific orifice to fill or with what. Now, set your pea brain working.

Whatever you say, Orifice Boy.

I don't know how a "progressive" could, in good conscience, go on a cruise. I mean, a cruise ship is a floating behemoth of consumerism and conspicuous consumption (have you ever seen the buffet spreads on those things?!).
Perhaps the cruise ship will adhere to progressive principles during the Air America cruise. If that's the case, I wouldn't go anywhere near that boat 'cause I suspect every passenger will be chained to the deck, given long oars and be forced to row so as to reduce the carbon footprint.

There may indeed be a legitimate point to be made about whether cruise ships are environmentally-friendly.
Friends of the Earth rated cruise ships and gave the Holland America Line the highest grade. That's the one the Air America cruise will be using. So, at least they're using what seems to be the "greenest" cruise ship company (not coincidentally, one hopes). But should they be taking a cruise at all? Good question...

What a load of ass! There is no such thing as a "green" cruise! Freezing your ass off in your own home and riding a bicycle to work is not for them, it's for everyone else! That's why we hate liberals, they're the biggest boldface hypocrites! They're so very generous with my tax dollars to "help" people, but how many actually donate time to a good cause that doesn't involve self-aggrandizement or self-promotion? None!
The only thing funnier than tiny cat pants is the idea that someone finds Aunt B.'s blog drivel remotely interesting. Apparently Betsy has found a rapt audience among the collectors of minutiae and those who think whining to be the sweetest of prosody.

Aw, Joe, the good thing is that people who find whining to be the sweetest of prosody are going to love your comment.

Well, I'm sad to report that, if you were trying to get rid of me, it didn't work.
The top five are Digby, Mike Lux, Karl Frisch, Joe Jervis, and Pam Spaulding. (See here.) All are very deserving.
Frankly, being outted the other day as an accidental Republican operative probably torpedoed my chances.
Or, you know, that I don't have millions of readers.
Either one.
