Morning Roundup: Taxi Driver Edition

Posted by Tracy Moore on Wed, Dec 2, 2009 at 10:32 AM

Tennessee has now frozen enrollment for two public health insurance programs: CoverKids and CoverTN. That means kids who can't afford private insurance but don't qualify for Medicaid are out, and so are adults who are poor or self-employed.... Convicted murderer Cecil Johnson was executed at 1:34 a.m. for a robbery-homicide committed in 1980.... Do you take taxis? If so, perhaps you've encountered rude drivers. The Convention & Visitors Bureau, Tennessee Foreign Language Institute and Metro Licensing and Transportation Commission want to help. They're sponsoring a three-day etiquette course for the largely foreign-born workers who the city claims aren't "properly welcoming visitors." Most hilarious quote: "They have learned that people in America have small, superficial relationships with strangers," said Meagan Young, the language institute's project manager for the program. Not just strangers, Meagan!...

Darryl Waltrip gunned it into a meeting with the Metro Fair Board Tuesday with NASCAR buddy Sterling Marlin riding shotgun, leaving a trail of smoking-hot pavement, burning moonshine and bikini-clad women in their wake. Just across the line in Williamson County, where Waltrip lives, state troopers threw their hats to the ground, punched their speedometers and kicked at the dust. The big-shot racing duo then asked the board to consider leasing the racetrack for a handful of big-drawing yearly events rather than weekly races.... Grinch Alert: Someone's stealing Christmas trees from Boy Scout Troop 17!... Little Richard's out of the hospital.... Just what we need: another lazy river. Thanks Nashville Shores.

Oh the problem's with Nashville's taxis! Where to begin. Well first, you have to watch the meter. Some drivers will press the button to charge you by the time on top of mileage. This is only legal when they are waiting on you at a convenience store, ATM or quick errand between your pickup and drop-pff locations. You would be surprised how many do this.
Payment can be an issue. In NYC, Boston, or Chicago, cabs are outfitted with a credit card reader in the back seat. The credit card terminal/computer screen lists the fare breakdown, driving route, etc. (http://www.creativemobiletech.com/solutions/vsol2.html) In Nashville, drivers have to "call it in" while you sit at your destination. Many will take an imprint of your card with those archaic AMEX carbon copy gadgets.
Above all, I find it annoying as hell to give the driver directions. If I don't - they will take the long route to jack up the meter. I feel like I am sitting in the back seat anticipating a problem. Stress should not be part of the experience.

No. Please no on the taxi etiquette course. Do people think it's rude for drivers not to make chitchat? I like the quiet on the ride home away from my small, superficial relationship with a stranger.

Ashley, btw, you are one of my favorite superficial relationships.
If you ever do have anything significant, brutally honest or emotionally sensitive that you need to get off your chest, please keep it to yourself. I'd hate to spoil our special bond.

A superficial relationship with Ashley would be a step up from my current non-existent one.

Please don not use taxis. Use Metro Livery. Best of Nashville Scene 2009. They have best rates with best cars and all American cool drivers!
