In the Know? Then You Already Knew Franklin is the Malibu of Tennessee

Make no mistake: We were way "in the know" about the fact that Nashville is the third coast and the new L.A., and the next Brooklyn, but were we hip enough to know Franklin is the Malibu of Tennessee? I hate it when the Times knows before I do. Head hung in shame. From the New York Times' style mag T:
In-Store | F.M. Allen Those in the know call Franklin, Tenn., just outside Nashville, the ''Malibu of Tennessee.'' A small city with a lot of spending power--thanks to locals with names like Keith, Nicole and Wynonna--Franklin recently got a boost with the arrival of Will Woods's men's-wear shop F. M. Allen. (He also has a New York store.) Woods calls the brand ''rugged yet elegant,'' just right for the genteel country life.

If Franklin is the Malibu of Tennessee, then I'm the Carl Bernstein of Nashville. What the hell are they smoking?

I think it needs to be pointed out that this item doesn't come from "The" New York Times Magazine, but from the fashion supplement "T." As if I needed any further reason to know why I routinely toss it out every Sunday.

East Nashville is the Camden Town of Davidson County, you know. And Murfreesboro is basically the Providence of the South. I could do this all day.

You're right, David -- it was the Style mag, not the regular Sunday mag. I'll correct it.

I noted that "Athens of the South hasn't
been used in any references lately, and
that's certainly with reason. Nashville has
a "new brand" name now, thanks to the new
Urbanism declared by the Mayor and a few
others. I suspect it will soon be called
the new "Du Bai" of the south when all
the bills come due!

Dubai contains architecture only slightly more ridiculous than the crap Nashville has, so the comparison, while roundabout, is apt.

Well, if the only comparison is some stars like to shop and live there, well then, sure Franklin is so much like Malibu. But that's where the comparisons end, IMO. Of course, Franklin is "Tennessee's #1 small town" (or is it America's?) according to, well um, the city of Franklin. I actually think that sign needs to come down and a new one that says, "Nashville's #1 suburb" needs to go up in it's stead, since Franklin ceased to be a "small town" about twenty years ago and seems to be striving to be another Murfreesboro instead.

We all know Hendersonville is Nashville's #1 Suburb. Sheesh, Chris.

Franklin is the Malibu of TN which explains all the Franklin Barbies who can't drive their freaking SUVs down there. Also, the rock slides regularly closing I-65, the wildfires every fall, and the celebrities enjoying rehab stints at Passages.
Okay, maybe not the last three.

And Woodbine is the McAllen, Texas of the South.

I thought East Nashville was Nashville's Williamsburg?
