Pith's Guide to Commenting

Posted by Ashley Spurgeon on Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 4:54 PM

EDITOR'S NOTE: This post was originally published at 9:55 a.m. Sept. 21, but a glitch caused it to vanish into the ether. Unemployed? Retired? Work in a cube? Work from home? Have your own corner office? If you fall into any of the above categories, made-up statistics show you are spending 30 percent of your day online, relentlessly searching for current events to comment on. Because we are living in both crazy days and heady times, these remarks naturally run the gamut of the political spectrum. From misogynist right-wingers to misogynist left-wingers and all the feminazis in between, everyone has an opinion! A few of the more prolific time-wasters (such as myself) have been noticing patterns and phrases that are worrying, not to mention annoying. No matter what your beliefs, civil discourse should be the default method of discussing how kids today don't got no respect for nothing. Here's where you go wrong: Lefties:
  • Reicht-wing - Godwin's Law, people! Conservatives are not Nazis and all of the witty wordplay in the world will not make it so. Do you pull out your awesome puns at parties? No, because everyone would hate you. And there is no such thing as an awesome pun.
  • Repuglican (and variants) - I know you're playing on the word "repugnant," but mostly it just makes me think of pug dogs. Right now, a Marxist college freshman and his racist grandpa are bonding over their love puppies. Everyone likes dogs! Insult fail!
  • Seeking Offense - Feminist blogs are the worst for this one. A nice community interest story about an old widow volunteering at an animal shelter can suddenly turn into a sandstorm of oppression about "lack of agency" and "patriarchal mores" and "priviliged ageism" that have nothing to do with the topic at hand. Lighten up!
Righties:
  • Libtard - "Liberal retard" is both funnier and more offensive. Don't be lazy. Go for the gold!
  • Democrat Party - What a weird insult! I understand what's going on, you're trying to disrespect your opponent by using a name they don't use as a self-identifier. Honestly, I have to admire the subtlety of the attack. Undermining just like mom used to make!
  • Making Everything About Your Religion - Some things just aren't. Foreign policy, for one. Also domestic policy. Science. Elections. Sporting events. Pretty much everything other than church or your household has nothing to do with Jesus. Sorry.
All You Jerks:
  • Sheeple - Any person that actively embraces this portmanteau forfeits their right to have anyone else care about his or her opinions.
  • ALL CAPS - CALM DOWN DUDE IT'S JUST THE INTERNET!!!
  • Methinks - Because my rage is irrational and blind, this is the thing that gets on my nerves the most. Have you ever heard a human being use this word in real-life conversation? Ever? No. But I bet you've read it dozens of times online. Today. It does not make you Shakespearian; it makes you kind of creepy. What gets under your skin? Are there any particular commenting trends that make you go Hulk all over the keyboard?

Considering the language and nature of the Scene's own employees posts, you don't have any standning to be lecturing anyone else about civility.

Esspecially over at the Tennessean, I see a tendency of those on the right to castigate the paper as a "liberal rag" not worth the paper it's printed on. The funny thing is, that they always come back to read it.

Gilbert is lecturing us on civility. Start looking for a white rabbit with a pocket watch.

My main objection is being called a Republican because I am for fiscal sanity and restraint in government. The Republican has morphed into a kind of Democrat which lacks the courage of their convictions, but finds them convenient as talking points when they are courting voters. METHINKS THEY ARE CALLED SHEEPLE!

I fail to see any reason in the whole world why I should care what some libtard - that's right, LIBTARD...suck on it, punk - at some libtard rag thinks are over-used phrases. Saying they're over-used doesn't make them so, no matter what YOU say! And that will remain true throughout the history of the entire universe. There is no libtard on the planet capable of proving otherwise.
Go on, prove it.
I'm waiting.
All Democrats are commies.

I personally love the word "libtard." It conveys perfect meaning in a very succinct way. But you got me on the "liberal retard" phrasing so I will start using that instead. I will keep using "libtard" for those instances where I need to be brief, such as texts and tweets.
BY THE WAY, YOU'RE SUCH A LIBERAL RETARD. HA, HA, HA!!!!!

Jesus. Don't we have anything better to comment about than comments about comments.
And just for information, in case you don't understand I'll say it slow: methinks it's just too damn bad creepiness creeping creates craziness. Because there is after all, a certain charisma too.

This post really is a bit presumptious. You could have written about the annoying phrases (and I agree about almost all of them) without imperiously telling everyone to stop using them.

I am offended by the overuse of "this new will make Nashville a world-class city." This attempts to render any argument to that project as being from someone who is not progressive in thought or spirit.
A lot of the things we want to build exists in cites no one would label as "world class" in stature. There are a lot of things in place that could already place us in that lofty perch. But there are a lot more that would have to be overcome that one project is not capable of fixing.

I agree that this post is weird, the voice is all off and wandering about in the wilderness looking for itself. Not Pithy. Keep looking, Ashley.

Hey, any post that uses the word "portmanteau" is okay by me.

I find that "dumbass" is an effective and accurate description of those Reicht-wingers.
