Some Tennesseans Call for Human Sacrifice

Posted by Betsy Phillips on Wed, Sep 16, 2009 at 7:49 AM

I'm trusting that someone else here at Pith will clarify all the bizarre shenanigans that went on last night as the Metro Council finally passed the non-discrimination ordinance, because I'm pretty sure a council member who couldn't be bothered to be in the room for the vote had the chutzpah to show up to the celebration afterward, like she was a part of the victory, and that conservative council members tried to pass even more non-discrimination things. I don't know, it's very confusing.

I would, however, like to focus on this little bit I read in the Tennessean:

Among them was Liese Thomas, who drove from Bartlett, Tenn., in Shelby County.

"I believe that one man and one woman's marriage is the stabilizing force of all healthy civilizations, and where there are any deviations, the civilizations start to crumble," she said.

This is actually one of my favorite arguments against anti-discrimination measures--"We have to be able to oppress these people or civilization will crumble!!!!"

Wow.

Really?  If I can't treat my neighbor like shit and ruin his job at Metro if he's in love with another man, civilization will crumble?

So, it's practically my duty to single out these folks, set them aside, and make them miserable on purpose, maybe, if we're lucky, drive them to suicide even, in order to ensure the stability of my civilization?

Whew doggie, these calls for human sacrifice never fail to crack me up.  Because, you know, nothing says "civilization" like saying "we have to set you aside, ruin your life, possibly cause your death, for the good of our community."

It's especially hilarious (and sad) in a state like Tennessee, where so many people are running around professing their Christian bona fides all over the place. I don't know, it's been a while since I've read the Gospel, maybe the new translations have a verse where Jesus says, "I'm just saying this stuff about me being the perfect sacrifice and how no other will be needed after me  and turn the other cheek and love your enemies and so on so that those jackasses there, and those there, don't catch on that, once I'm gone, you guys should fuck them up as hard as you can."

But I doubt it.

What I really think is that some Christians in this state could benefit from spending a little more time reading the red words in their Bibles.

The red words are the spicy ones, right?

I don't know why I even scrolled down but (as to be expected) the comments to that Tennessean story are making my head explode.
Nashville is becoming the "San Francisco of the East"?
Gays brought down the Roman Empire and are going to do the same to the U.S.A.?
It's funny that for a portion of the population that conservatives like to make smaller than it actually is - they like to give a whole lot of power to change society to GLBT people. They're responsible for natural disasters (hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes), terrorist attacks, and now they are going to crumble the very core of our society and our nation. If gay people are so powerful, why do they have such a hard time passing laws to grant themselves protection from things like being harrassed and fired because of their private lives?

Excellent post! The audacity of these people is just astounding!
Anti-gays love to cite the statistics about how gays are more likely to suffer from depression and have higher suicide rates. What they don't tell you is that it's homophobia and just general hostility against gays that makes them depressed and suicidal.

One of my most head-scratching moments was Sam Coleman's contention that if this was passed, Metro would be risking fiscal irresponsibility if a 'third bathroom' might have to be built. For homophobes? Morons?

No, the third bathrooms would be reserved for Christian conservative congressmen who are looking for dates.

Betsy,
Could you please identify this council member who showed up to the party?
Thanks.

Betsy...thanks for this. I am so disgusted with the reicht-wing "christians" wrapped up in their flags waving the bible. Jesus would have much to say to them if He were still in the flesh on this earth, and it wouldn't be those things they probably feel they deserve to hear from Him....like well done good and faithful servant...you really showed those faggots. That's not the Jesus I learned about as a child.
The letters in red will set you free if you let them.

Hey Jill: I LOL'd at your post. Hilarious....and most likely true!

According to NCP, It was Vivian Wilhoite who missed the vote, for the record. Cheers to the crumbling of civilization!

What's wrong with human sacrifice anyway?
We off thousands each day in abortions right?
But Cass Sunstein will get it right soon when he pulls milk and meat from school lunches.
Milking cows and killing them for burgers is totally off the scale of good sense.
