Vice Mayor Diane Neighbors casts the tie-breaking vote to stop deferral on guns in parks, and the Metro Council then decides to opt out of the new state law. "I had a feeling I might have to vote tonight," she says. ... The council votes 37-2 to create a convention center authority, but Mike Jameson and four others immediately move for reconsideration, forcing another vote Sept. 1. Zach Wamp wants to blow up employer-based health care insurance. ... Funding for the Tennessee Commission on Holocaust Education is at risk. ... The Tennessee Film, Entertainment & Music Commission focuses on trying to attract lower-budget productions. ... TennCare inspector makes 1,000th arrest. ... TVA won't say who might have been given preferential treatment for access to water on the agency's shorelines. .... Geoff Calkins on Willie Herenton's mental state:
Willie Herenton wants you to know that he is not crazy. Just as Richard Nixon wanted you to know that he was not a crook. Just as Roger Clemens wanted you to know that he did not take steroids. Just as Bill Clinton wanted you to know that he did not have sexual relations with that woman. Just as Larry Craig wanted you to know that he was not gay. All these centuries later, that other Willie -- Shakespeare -- had it right, didn't he? Thou dost protest too much.

Gosh Jeff, I just read a news release (released an hour ago) that the Scene and NFocus have both been sold the the people that own the City Paper. Don't you think that merits a Pith post?

So, Jim Cooper and Zach Wamp have a similar idea on health care, remove it from the employment market, but one gets a full page encomium in the print edition and the other gets a sarcastic and hyperbolic line in the blog. Maybe we should examine the issue of employer provided health care's tax advantages intelligently instead of saying Wamp wants to "blow up" something.
