Crazy Talk in a State House Race Debate

Posted by Jeff Woods on Wed, Aug 19, 2009 at 12:08 PM

Here's some great news for voters in the special election to fill Democrat Curt Cobb's seat in the state House: All the candidates running in the Republican primary are out to lunch. That much was revealed during a debate last night in Shelbyville. Three of the four GOP candidates agreed the state should give back our billion-dollar-plus share of the economic stimulus money. The fourth candidate wants to hold all that money for a couple of years just to be safe, not spend it, and then return it to the feds. Maybe he's a moderate. Basically, all these guys want to shut down state government. Also, they must not realize the state's already spending that cash to stave off massive cuts in services. The only Democrat in the race, Cobb's brother Ty, didn't attend the debate. Voters can only hope he's running for the legislature because he thinks state government actually serves a useful purpose. h/t Kleinheider

Interesting story, Mr. Woods. I didnt think you were working today. How else could one explain that you have yet to post the news (now two hours old) that you will shortly be working for Mr. Kleinheider instead of just stealing his posts.

What wacky ideas? I didn't hear anything that I haven't heard on CNN/MSNBC/FOX from expert talking heads on both sides of the political spectrum.

Your corporate bosses at VVM have finally issued a news release (at 12:14 pm ) confirming the sale. Even the Tennessean has posted the story. (Even I am starting to feel sorry for you and the rest of the staff for being muzzled.)

Cut'em some slack, Henry. This isn't just another news story for them to riff on; it's something that impacts them personally, and possibly traumatically. If they don't get around to commenting on it for a day or two, so be it. Read about it elsewhere, and hope that everyone employed at Scene comes out the other side of this OK.
In the meantime, let them figure out how to break to their loved ones that they might be out of a job. Seems fair, doesn't it?

You're are right,of course. Even if I do giving grief to Jeff (who has done it often enough to me), Im starting to feel a little guilty. Im sure most of the staff in Nashville want to write a story on the sale---because that's what good journalists do---and you'd think that they would at least be allowed to post VVM's own press release.
The serious point here is that this eerie silence speaks volumes about the corporate culture of Village Voice Media and tells us why the paper's sale to local owners is good news for nearly everyone.

Maybe the new owners will get rid of the writers who label everyone they disagree with as "crazy." One can only hope.
